Guest Marcel Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Hi, I have a noname SIL3114 4-port SATA-Controller on an ASROCK P4V88+ (VIA-chipset with 2-Port onboard sata). With RAID5-BIOS, Windows Server 2003 started formatting my 4-HD-Array but couldn't complete it ("the format did not complete successfully"). The same happens when I use the SATA-Controller with a simple BIOS without onboard-RAID functions. Neither Quick-format nor longformat could complete the format. I also tried different cluster- and volume-size with no success. Any ideas? Should I use another special format utility? Marcel
Guest Dave Patrick Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Re: Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 Are you installing an operating system? If so you can partition and format during Windows setup. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. Guest Marcel Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Re: Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 Hi Dave, I changed the SIL3114 SATA-controller with a costy 3ware SATA RAID5-controller. Now, the stuff is running like a charm. But I would really like to know why Windows Server 2003 couldn't complete the SIL3114 RAID-format. Marcel
Guest Dave Patrick Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Re: Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 Were you doing this from text mode portion of Windows setup or from within Windows GUI? -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. Guest Marcel Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Re: Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 Hi Dave, I'm trying to format from with the Windows GUI on a ready Windows Server. I didn't try it from text setup, because I learned it's not a good idea to install too much features while the setup procedure. Marcel
Guest Dave Patrick Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Re: Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 Well I don't really know what you mean by that but you might try reconstructing the raid from controller bios. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup. Guest Marcel Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Re: Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 I'm speaking of a simple format command from within in the Windows GUI (my computer -> manage -> disk management tool) which doesn't complete its job. Just before the end of the format job, windows says "can't complete format ". I have no idea why this happens. Using a 3ware controller (instead of the SIL3114) completes the same job perfectly. Guest Dave Patrick Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Re: Can't format Soft-RAID5 on Windows Server 2003 The controller bios may have some level of disk diagnostics that may shed light on this. -- Regards, Dave Patrick ....Please no email replies - reply in newsgroup.
