kevh Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) Hi :) Finally have Win7 Pro upgrade(from vista) and MS office Pro 2010 on the way from Software4students (very good deal :D ) and was wanting to set up the pc correctly with user accounts for all my family on the 1 pc. Can anyone give me any tips before i begin on how Outlook2010 will work in each user area , how files are shared or restricted etc and AV software + updates etc all work ?. Also i assume progs loaded in are available for all users to use and dont need to be loaded once for each user ? Am sure will all come clear when setting up , but any tips would be greatly appreciated , thanks . Synapse Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Outlook will create a separate data file for each user's email, and will store each one in the user profile. There is no crossover between users emails unless you were to deliberately set it up that way. Quote
RandyL Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 AV software will be for all users. Just install it and it will protect and scan for all users. It has to work that way in order to protect the entire computer. As for other programs there are some that will give you the option to install for just the account you are installing from but otherwise they should install to all accounts. It's really just the same as it was in Vista. As for 7 I really like it. I liked Vista over XP but 7 is better. My Vista got zapped by a thunderstorm anyway so it's just 7 and XP now. Just ask away kev and enjoy. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. kevh Posted September 21, 2010 Author Posted September 21, 2010 Thanks for replies , sounds good to me. I assume if i want the kids to look at our photos but not to be able to delete them its just a matter of giving the correct permision on the folder to their user profile. Can users be given permission to look at other users files or does it have to be a public file ? Plastic Nev Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Hi Kev, I don't have other users on this or any other computer. I don't (luckily) have any others here to mess things up ha ha. Any way that means I haven't tried any of that area so can't help. However, you will find there is no such thing as "Outlook" or even "Outlook Express" any more, mail is handled now by Windows Live, but it still asks for all the usual details to set up E mail accounts, the usual POP3 and SMPT stuff so easy enough to set up, also it will handle more than one account type, as a for instance I have the usual server based E mail coming in via my ISP, in my case "me" @ *******.com and also I have a web based account which could be for instance "ME"@hotmail.com Once I have opened Windows live both accounts are displayed. To be sure of receiving my mail I do have to open and then minimise Windows Live to the task bar, but whichever service gets a mail in, I get a notifier that there is new mail. If I haven't opened it, nothing happens. I personally think the Windows default new mail notifier sound is too short and a bit puny, so I installed a WAV file of my own (me playing a few notes on my trumpet ha ha) but any WAV file that is not too long will do. If you want to install your own WAV file to replace any of the Windows default sounds it is quite easy providing you have the file in the first place. First open control panel, if "View by" is "category", click and change to large icons, then click on "Sounds". Then click the "Sounds" tab in the sounds window. Scroll down the list to, in this case "New Mail Notification" and click on it. Next select the drop down menu under sounds, it will display all WAV files you have on your computer in the music folder, by the name, just select the one you want to use, click test to be sure you have the right one, then click "Apply" and OK. If you don't have any WAV files you will have to create them, more on that if you need it. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. kevh Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 Hi Nev Thanks for reply. I already use Win7 on work Pc and love it but dont have different users setup. At Work already have Outlook 2007 and think it is a fantastic piece of software and not just an email client. Windows live mail i put up with at home and drives me crazy!! most of the time, but its days are numbered:rip: (Outlook 2010 :D ) Need to have a look at OL 2010 alerts as creatin Wav files sounds fun ;) I use Audacity a little so i assume that would be good for the job ? The weather looks good so not sure if i'll manage the upgrade this weekend:rolleyes: Cheers Kev  Quote Home Pc: Intel i5 - 4460 3.20 ghz 8gb Kingston Hyper-X Fury Dual-DDR3 1600MHz Windows 10 64bit HomeEVGA 960 GTX SSC 2Gb GDDR 5 DX12Corsair VS430watt PSU250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD24" Benq Led screen Work Pc: Quad Q9550 2.83ghz4gb XMS2 DDR2 800mhzAsus P5QL Mobo Windows 7 PremiumPalit GTS250 1GB ddr3 450watt FSP PSU640Gb WD Caviar Blue HD22" Samsung Lcd (1680x1050)
Plastic Nev Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Hi again Kev, I got used to Windows live, and only having the two E mail accounts suits me fine. Audacity will do fine for creating WAV files, all you need is a microphone or similar input device, you can also use it to snip parts out of an existing sound file and convert to WAV. Nev. Plastic Nev Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 Ah, I think you mean, "How do I get files, folders, etc, to share with all other users." The answer is you make them public. Then all logged in users can see them, this also means any one else on another computer in the network can also see them too, so if you are using the machine in a network, do remember that. However, as I said earlier, I don't have multiple accounts, so not sure about this bit, but there may also be a way to share with named users rather than making them fully public if the computer is networked with others. kevh Posted September 30, 2010 Author Posted September 30, 2010 Hi Nev I think i've got it now , kind of :D I have 5 users on same pc , have also 2nd hard drive which ive placed our photo folder and music folder which i then want everyone to be able to read but only my wife and i to read and write/modify. So i basically included the folders in each users library (Pictures and Music) also included in each users photo gallery and media player. Then clicked on the pictures and music folders and gave the correct permissions to each person for these folders. This seems to have worked fairly well so far ( apart from a little trouble picking my user name but that might have been me messing:rolleyes: ) but its early days yet ;) As standard users i 'm assuming the kids (or wife :D ) wont be able to mess up any major windows settings , i hope. Parental controls for the kids is next challenge. Cheers Kev  Quote Home Pc: Intel i5 - 4460 3.20 ghz 8gb Kingston Hyper-X Fury Dual-DDR3 1600MHz Windows 10 64bit HomeEVGA 960 GTX SSC 2Gb GDDR 5 DX12Corsair VS430watt PSU250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD24" Benq Led screen Work Pc: Quad Q9550 2.83ghz4gb XMS2 DDR2 800mhzAsus P5QL Mobo Windows 7 PremiumPalit GTS250 1GB ddr3 450watt FSP PSU640Gb WD Caviar Blue HD22" Samsung Lcd (1680x1050)
RandyL Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 As always if you don't want the kids installing anything make sure their account is set to Standard and not Administrator. That is right. As a Standard user they can't change any settings. Set up a file on your Administrator account. Log in to a Standard account. Try to delete the file. See what happens. Your library links have been very informative to me kev. Thanks. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Plastic Nev Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Those links are good, thanks for finding them Kev, even though I try to give help on W7, a lot of the time I am still trying to get my head round some of the major changes from the old XP, I quite often have to go running round my own system to find what is needed for someone else, takes more time than doing the reply ha ha. Still, each one means I learn more, no bad thing. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here.
