BunniLeigh Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi all, Im posting in win7 thread, but not sure it right place. I installed win7 ultimate, about 3 weeks ago, and everything was great, until two days ago.. when for some reason, when i switched pc on, it lasted about 20 minutes and then just switched off !!!, i restarted it lasted about 2 minutes.. then off again... no warning nothing.... when i restarted the 3rd time, it seemed fine until of course i switched off, went to work.. when i came back home, same problem. so figured it must be win7... so have now gone back to vista... installation went fine.. no problems... but then... same problem with shutting down... it has shut down twice already, but since then it has been running fine for about 2 hours  My pc is an HP, which has a diagnostic feature, when i ran that, everything seemed fine.. eg memory, hard drive etc... anyone any ideas please Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 It does not seem as if your problem is related to Windows 7 if it ran for 20 minutes. Leaving aside malware as a cause for the moment, it seems as if your PC may be overheating. Has it been cleaned recently (or at all?) What diagnostic program are you referring to and what is the make and model of your machine? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
BunniLeigh Posted September 22, 2010 Author Posted September 22, 2010 sorry my post was not very helpfull i guess lol... pc is Hewlett Packard s3652uk AMD Phenom 9150e Quad- Core Processor 1.80 Ghz 64bit. The diagnostic program is built into the pc, i have only used it once before, which was shortly after i bought the computer, where it told me that my hard drive had failed. (which hp sorted for me) when i ran it this morning, it showed no errors at all. I admit, apart from cleaning the dust from the outer caseing, i have not cleaned it, as im a little frightened of opening the caseing. Thanks. Quote
DSTM Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi BunniLeigh I am more inclined to think it could be a Hibernation setting. Worth checking.:) Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
BunniLeigh Posted September 22, 2010 Author Posted September 22, 2010 Hi DTSM, thanks for that, i have never used those, i normally switch them all off, and it also seems strange that after two resets, it all works fine. But i will go and check to see, so thank you. Quote
DSTM Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Next I would like to see what temps your Harware is running at.:) This program (Free) will display all temps and give us an idea if it's Temp related. So easy to use. Speccy - Download Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
BunniLeigh Posted September 22, 2010 Author Posted September 22, 2010 thank you am doing it now :) Quote

RandyL Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 If one of your fans is failing it will cause a shutdown. The HP diagnostics tool won't detect that. Sometimes when a fan is failing it will cut out at odd times. Then it will shutdown to prevent overheating. Opening the case and observing the fans when it crashes and shuts down is one possibility. Another possibility is if you have a 1394 port device plugged in. There is a hotfix for your model at HP. Quote We are all members helping other members. BunniLeigh Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 Sorry for late reply (work :( ) Thanks so much for all your advice as usual, having a good old clean out seems to have done the trick :) One problem sorted.. another has now arisen, this time router problems, but am trying something else first, so i make sure i try all options, before calling on you good people once again. But thank you. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 I have only just seen this, but 58 degrees is hot even for an 'economic' quad chip, if you can run the same diagnostic that DSTM advised and check the temps have dropped (it is very possible that the dust in the fans could be causing the high temps ) Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
BunniLeigh Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 Hmm thanks Dalo, It is the same im afraid, somedays i have no problems at all. Then others it just does the same, shuts down twice and then all is fine. Very strange. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 I would contact HP and see what they advise as 58 is hot Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
BunniLeigh Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 Thanks for that, I will try but guessing that my warranty has now expired they wont be too helpfull. :@) Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 I personally would remove the CPU heatsink and re apply thermal paste, then re attach the heatsink. There are not many things that can cause temps that high:- MOBO over volting the CPU Thermal paste not applied correctly Fan on the heatsink not working cheap passive heatsinks Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
