Chip fan stop or too slow

Recommended Posts

Recently when I boot up the XP, just before the POSE, I got the warning the

chip fan speed is slow or stop and ask me to press F1 or goto setup.

I just goto BIOS setup and stop the warning.

How do I get the details of the problem?

My CPU is AMD Athlon 3200+.

Did you check the fan to see if it is running?

Sounds like a hardware issue, unrelated to Windows.

Try a hardware newsgroup.

No details needed. You will need to open the case, look for the

faulty fan and replace it.

Good way to destroy your CPU.

ignoring a problem with your fan is not a very good idea!

Re: Chip fan stop or too slow

Do as everyone else says, buy one and open the case and replace it.

If its over 2 years old and you are in there then replace it.

The cost of a fan or the cost of a new processor / motherboard..... lets

see.....

PS. Some MB come with utilities to monitor voltage and fans and temp.

They are pretty good in that they have an alarm to let you know the

minute something goes wrong. You never want to run a CPU overheating

for any length of time. Even drives in the cabinet.

Blow out the dust while you're in there too.

It depends on your board.

Without knowing anything about your PC it is hard to say.

Either it is a problem of you CPU fan not running properly, or your BIOS has

set the fan to run at a certain temp, and it hasn't reached that temp yet,

so the fan hasn't started, (I've had to disable alarms because of that one).

You may have a CPU cooler that is fanless or low speed.

The CPU fan may be connected to the wrong motherboard header meaning it is

working but the motherboard can't detect it.

I assume your PC runs normally otherwise? Is this a new problem or has it

always been like this?

If the fan isn't running as it should it's best to get it fixed. Your PC

will start to lock up shortly after boot due to overheating. It's not likely

you will destroy your CPU. Your heatsink would basically need to fall off

for that to happen.

Fans are cheap, and CPUs are expensive. Ignoring the warning is

foolhardy.

Open the case. If the fan is clogged with dust, blow it out with a can

of compressed air. If that gets rid of the warning, good. If not, get

the fan replaced.

Do not delay. The risk of losing the CPU to overheating is real and

imminent.

What details are you expecting to get? Like everybody says, take care of

the fan problem. If you don't know how or are intimidated by the idea of

replacing it yourself, take it to a shop. On the chance that it is not the

fan but the voltage to the fan from the power supply I think I would let a

shop take care of it for you.

Don't continue to run the computer until the problem is cleared.

What details? The chip fan isn't working.

I admit the instructions could be clearer - the message doesn't tell you how

to correct the problem.

Replace the fan.

Why ask HERE? How fast your CPU fan is running has NOTHING to do with

XP and is a pure hardware problem.

Ask elsewhere

Sure, for general questions ABOUT XP. How does a fan inside the case

apply there? I'll save you a lot of head scratching: IT DOESN'T.

The post does not belong here.

Yep - questions that have something to do with XP. The OP question

does NOT and is out of place HERE.

And you are not the newsgroup police. There is nothing wrong with the user

starting here. He soon gets redirected to a better group but the user

seldom knows much about his computer beyond that it is running XP when he

a .general group when he is first wrestling with a problem.

Hi,

My motherboard is ASUS A8N-E.

I opened the case and look into the motherboard have no idea where the chip

fan is. Read the motherboard manual does say the location of the chip fan on

the diagram.

I also checked the CD come with motherboard found no utility to monitor the

speed and temperature of the motherboard chip.

"normally" there is only one fan on the motherboard. Its on the main

processor/cpu. If you have a high end video card, they too have a fan.

Both of these produce heat. Other than that, there are fans on the

cases.

If the manual tells you where the chip is, does this not solve your problem?

It sits on top of the cpu. Its pretty good sized. Asus has a utility on

the cd for monitoring the cpu temps and fan speeds. You can also download

it from Asus.

Hi,

I know there is a fan sits on the CPU.

And finally I found the fan on the motherboard.

I am not sure did the POSE said the CPU fan or the motherboard chip fan? Did

this 'chip' refers the motherboard chip?

I also found the motherboard fan is spinning too.

I installed the Cool'n quiet tool from the CD comes with ASUS motherboard,

but what program do I run to look at the speed and temperature of the

'chip'?

I think you need to take this to a shop. This seems to be over your

head. Chip or CPU. A cpu is a chip. Fruit / Apple.

IT DON'T MATTER. if the fan has stopped then preplace it. It's there

for a reason and sitting still is not one of them.

Any program you load puts something in the start menu or in the system

tray or control panel, see something NEW?. Its a program you loaded

thus it works like any other program. Look on the start menu.

Man T

I also have an A8NE. The fan you refer to is I believe the

Southbridge chip fan. Mine makes racket every once in a while

too. I have a fan I am going to replace it with ready for the next

time I

get a chance to do so. I also get the fan is running too slow

message. In order to replace the fan from what I have seen

you will have to unplug the pc (of course) and turn it on its

side. Then it looks like you have to drill out some plastic

rivets. Clean the chip of thermal paste and reinstall

the new one. ASUS had a lot of trouble with these fans when

they made this board. It is a real good board though otherwise.

Good Luck!
