JoBonnett Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 My computer froze as i was installing a game and I had to reboot. Now it won't turn on. It gets to the bit where it prompts you to enter safe mood, but then whatever option i choose from there it starts to load, then a get a blank screen, and then a graduation bar shows at the bottom. This bar slowly goes all white and then it just reboots and goes back to the beginning. I can enter set up, but can't get in anything else The operating system is windows XP professional. AMD Athlon 64, ASUS, K8V SE Deluxe motherboard. Quote

JoBonnett Posted September 22, 2010 Author Posted September 22, 2010 As this is XP Pro - do you have the installation disk? When I first got the computer I got a message saying the version of Windows wasn't genuine. I paid for Windows genuine advantage kit disc which I installed to fix this problem but I'm not sure if that is the same thing. Quote
RandyL Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Frequently asked questions about the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit If you order the WGA Kit online, a new product key will be sent to you in e-mail when the payment is confirmed. You will also receive the Windows XP CD and media through postal mail within four to six weeks. However, you may not have to reinstall Windows XP. Did they send you the XP disk? JoBonnett Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 yes i did get a disc but i just wasn't sure if that was what i needed to reinstall windows, or if i had to reinstall windows to fix the problem. Quote
KenB Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 If the disk you have is the full installation version of XP you can do a repair install of the Operating System. See here: How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install Scroll down to "Repair Install of XP" Before you start go into Set-up ( the BIOS ) and make sure that the DVD/CD ROM is set as the first boot device. The repair install shouldn't affect the data that you have on the drive but if you have any important stuff you may want to try getting to this first. There are one or two things we can advise on if you wish to do this first. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! JoBonnett Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 I have reinstalled windows and it's fine now. As i was giving the computer to my son it didn't matter that I lost all my stuff as I was going to have to delete it all anyway. Thanks for the advise. Quote

JoBonnett Posted September 30, 2010 Author Posted September 30, 2010 since re-installing windows I now have no sound - what do i need to do get it back ? Quote
KenB Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 You will need to install the sound drivers. Do you know the make and model of the sound card if you have one ? If not: What is the make and model number of your machine? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! JoBonnett Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 it was a computer i had made for me so no specific model number. I know it has a K8V series motherboard (I have a VIA K8t800 Chipset series Support CD but nothiing for a soundcard) Quote
KenB Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 If you have a sound card it will be sitting in one of the slots on the motherboard. (Probably the white PCI slots) There will be something written on the card to identify it. If there is no card - you have on-board sound and the drivers may well be on the chipset drivers CD.
