Help someone please.

I recently tried to upgrade my external Speedtouch modem for a broadband modem/router. I have Win XP with SP3, use IE8 and my isp is TalkTalk.

I purchased a router which I returned as I assumed there was a problem with it. Then I got one free from my isp (Huawei Broadband Wireless Router). Following instructions for a wired connection I was connected to the internet (according to the little green lights on the router) but was unable to open my home page (TalkTalk) and other web pages were extremely slow to open. This problem was the same as I had had with the purchased router.

I have spent one and a half hours on the 'phone to TalkTalk, changing and re-changing lots of my settings, but in the end they were unable to help me.

I have now re-connected my old Speedtouch modem which is connected to a USB port and the telephone line, and am able to connect to the internet once again.

The main reason I wanted a router was to be able to contact my other PC in order to share my internet connection, as I don't think I can do that with my Speedtouch modem.

Any suggestions gratefully received - thanks.

Get yourself a Speedtouch 576 wireless router. Good bit of kit and should be comparable in performance to the USB modem.

The Huawei ones seem to work ok, but the wireless range and stability is rubbish.

Also, it would be useful for us if you could post the settings you used in your router.

Hi Bet,

Only a suggestion: Have you searched for their latest drivers?

If you can get an internet connection but very slow, perhaps its a driver issue?

Thanks for the suggestions. Didn't bother with a wireless connection as I assume that wired is more efficient. The router from TalkTalk didn't require any settings, just connect the phone line, power plug and ethernet cable, all the green lights appeared as they were supposed to do.

The router I purchased did require more in the way of settings but they were fairly straightforward.

I tried all the settings given to me over the phone such as msconfig, ipconfig, etc. and pinged TalkTalk which gave a result of 4 packets sent, 0 received.

I am now going to try uninstalling avg antivirus and Zone Alarm and see what happens!

After that it's Yellow Pages to look for a local computer techie!

Hi there - thanks for your suggestion.

No I haven't searched for up to date drivers. I did say my connection was very slow but the main concern was that I was unable to connect to my isp TalkTalk and in any pages that did open eventually when I clicked on a link it took forever to open.

Hi betpet

I have relatives in Amlwych :)

Can you confirm please....

You cannot connect to TalkTalk at all ?

You can connect to the internet via your modem ?

Can you connect via ethernet cable through the TalkTalk router?

With your TalkTalk router connected

Open Internet Explorer.

Type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.

The user name and password are both ......admin

Click on the Advanced button.

Click the + next to Basic > then click on WAN Settings

Scroll down to MTU Option.

This should be set to 1432 bytes

Is it?

Hi KenB

Yesterday I uninstalled my AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm but that was no help.

To answer your questions:- Yes I can connect to TalkTalk via my modem.

I cannot connect to TalkTalk via the ethernet cable attached to the router. I can connect to some web sites, albeit slowly, but links on those pages won't open.

I did as you suggested and found that the MTU option was set at 1432 bytes.

Do you have any other options for me as I am now desperate enough to throw myself at the mercy of my local PC World!!!

When connected to the router via ethernet cable

If you open IE.

Type in the address bar at the top....

212.74.99.30

Does this open TalkTalk web page?

I really do not recommend PC World for repairs - you are far better with a small one-man concern who has to rely on his reputation.

Stick with it here - lets see what I and the others can do first.

My family live in Amlwch :)

You will have to enter the actual router webpage (there is a sticker on the bottom of the router with an IP address and a password normally something like:-

home page - 192.168.1.1

password - password

from here you can configure the router itself (set it to bridge mode if it isnt already being a modem/router it needs to be)

you can also set any log on details that you need.

Hi ScottyCFC

Problem now solved. You were right about drivers. It was my ethernet connection on the motherboard that needed updating. Installed an ethernet card instead and all working OK.
