Task Manager won't start

Recommended Posts

I installed a Task Manager replacement utility from PC magazine. It opened

and ran slowly so I uninstalled it.

But Task Manager has not come back. It does not open with Crl-Alt-Del nor

can I right click on the Task Bar to start it. I get nothing when I attempt

to start it - no error message... nothing.

I'm running XP Pro on a 3 year old Dell XPS.

Any quick fixes?

System Restore to a point before you installed the replacement?

Re: Task Manager won't start

Try:

Start/Run/taskmgr.exe

Does this work?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What

anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall

(if any)?

Can you open Regedit?

Start | Run | (type in) regedit | [OK]

Can you open IE Tools | Internet Options | Security tab?

Start/Run/Taskmanager.exe does not work.

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2008 with no other security software...

except there is a firewall in my BEC DSL modem.

Re: Task Manager won't start

It's 'taskmgr.exe' and not 'Taskmanager.exe'

This file can be found the in C:\Windows\system32 folder

and C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

You can double click on this file in either location as another way to see

if it runs.

Re: Task Manager won't start

Just did a search on my C drive for taskmgr.exe. I found it in

C:\window\system32. But when I try to start it I get a message saying Windows

cannot find the file.

So it looks like the software is there but hidden from the system somehow.

Re: Task Manager won't start

Try deleting this file: C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\TASKMGR.EXE-XXXXXXXX.pf

Now see if you can get it to run.

If it does work you should now see a new .pf (prefetch) file.

The "replacement utility" is called TaskPower. It is one of the programs

offered by PC Magazine in their free Utility series.

Re: Task Manager won't start

Check with Symantec Support: There may be a NIS setting or <spit> Norton

Add-on installed that's denying access to Task Manager, Jeff. (If you'd

answered No to the other questions, I'd suspect a hijackware infection,

which still may be a possibility).

Also let me ask: Did you upgrade to NIS 2008 from an earlier version of any

Norton application (e.g., NIS2005; NAV 2006)?

Re: Task Manager won't start

Pa Bear...

I will check with Symantec... but doubt NIS is the culprit.

I think the PC Magazine Task Manager replacement utility I installed and ran

for a couple weeks must have blocked the Windows Task Manager.

Unfortunately... removing the PC Mag utility did not remove their block.

As I said in one of my posts here... I find taskmgr.exe on my hard drive but

it won't start. When I double click I get nothing... no error message...

nothing.

I don't know if the PC Mag taskmanager.exe block is inside taskmgr.exe or

they block it somewhere else.

Re: Task Manager won't start

Copy the file C:\window\system32\taskmgr.exe to your My Documents folder.

Then go to your My Documents folder and double click on 'taskmgr.exe' and

see if this works.

Note: Do not confuse 'taskmgr.exe' with a similar file named 'taskman.exe'.

Re: Task Manager won't start

To all who replied to my original post... thanks.

I just received a reply to an email I sent PC Magazine. They suggested I

reinstall the PC Utility that cause the problem and uncheck the disable Task

Manager option. This solved my problem.

Thanks

Pa Bear...

To answer your question -- PC Magazine has a utility library. You pay an

annual subscription for access to download any of these utilities.

The one that caused my Task Manager problem is called TaskPower. It's a

replacement for Task Manager with a lot of extra bells and whistles.

Any way... all's well that ends well. I've got Task Manager back.

Re: Task Manager won't start

An alternative to Taskmgr is Process Explorer, and it does not disable

Taskmgr.

Re: Task Manager won't start

I don't know if you downloaded "Process Explorer" [procexp.exe], but

that may be where your problem occurred.. If you downloaded it like I

did, and it automatically was saved in your TEMPORARY Internet File

-(and IF you clicked "Options/ReplaceTaskManager" while it was open)-,

that's where your problem is... The PROCESS EXPLORER would work

*initially*, but then get deleted -(like if you ran *CCleaner

*afterwords)-... If that happened, NOTHING WORKS   :eek:to

open Taskmgr.exe EXCEPT the following -(at least this is the ONLY thing

that worked for me):-

Open Process Explorer... In my case, I couldn't find it & needed to

RE-download it... Open it & under the OPTIONS tab, click "RESTORE TASK

MANAGER"... VOILAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!

*-_THEEERRE'S_My_Precious_Little_Task_Manager!!__How've_you_BEEEENN_Baybeeee?!?!__Long_time_not_see!!__Luv_Yoooooo!!__MUA!!_MUA!!!_MUA!!!!_-*:D

:D :D

If you'd downloaded this previously & attempted to substitute it for

your Task Manager, -(then accidentally DELETED it, like I did)-,

Cntrl-Alt-Del would *_NOT__*work, *_NOR_* would attempting to open

*-_ANY_-* taskmgr.exe file on *-that computer-*! In my

case, I kept trying, but NOTHING worked... I'd get an error

message stating: -*"Windows cannot find

'C\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe'. Make sure you typed the name

correctly, and then try again." *- EVEN WHEN I COPIED THE TASKMGR.EXE

FILE FROM *-_ANOTHER_-* COMPUTER, IT WOULD *_-NOT-_* WORK...

Once I RE-Downloaded the "Process Explorer" & clicked

Options/RestoreTaskManager *_that_was_-IT-_*... -[You can download- (or

RE-download) -the Process Explorer here:

http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zip ]-

If this WAS the problem,

*_just_MAKE_SURE_to_SAVE_IT_in_a_location_where_it_won't_get_lost__*.

-(I put it in my System32)-

_Also:_ If you DO download the Process Explorer to the RIGHT location

and DO select "REPLACE TASK MANAGER", the Process Explorer WILL OPEN

when you click Cntrl-Alt-Del..

I hope this helps... I wasn't able to find the solution on ANY

message board, so hopefully THIS will help SOMEBODY... Hopefully it

solves the problem for the person who started this thread... -Life

AGAIN is GOOD... haha!!-

Blessings Kids!!
