Please help! Usb mobile broadband recognised as cd drive!

Hi there, hoping you can help! I just bought a new mobile broadband USB dongle for my Toshiba Satellite laptop. It should be plug and play but it's not working and when I look in my computer it is showing under cd drives. I then tried putting my previous mobile broadband dongle in so I could get online to look for a solution and that one is now doing the same, despite it having worked perfectly before. I called the provider who got me to do the usual uninstall/reinstall/reboot etc but that didn't work. I can't download anything to fix it as I have no Internet on it without the dongles working so now I'm stuck, please help! (I am using the vista operating system, not sure if that's relevant?!)

You need to run the software from the internet provider otherwise the dongle just appears as a USB thumb drive (which in essence it is)
