AD Site Links - What Ports?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Soon we are setting up a remote office. I have played around with Site Links

on the internal network, and also currently use it live for DFS File Servers,

and setting their priority (Primary and Redundant etc.) via Site costing. But

I have never used this for external site linking.

What ports are required on the ADSL modems to allow connectivity with each

server? We are not creating any new domains, just adding a additional domain

controller in the new office then linking it.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Chris,

To replicate between the sites you first have to establish a link to your

netowrk, so how do you realize this, via VPN or router-router connection?

So for example if you connect via VPN, then there is no need for that because

the way is still opened.

Best regards

Re: AD Site Links - What Ports?

Hi Meinolf!

Thanks for the reply and you raised a valid question.

If I create a VPN connection on the remote DC, that obviously creates a very

good incrypted link between the PDC and the remote DC.

But in the event of an ADSL line going down or cut-off quickly, then

reconnected, how does the remote server go about re-establishing a connection?

I assumed with Site to Site linking I wouldn't need to run any connections

and therefore could trust that when the link has returned, so would the

connection to the PDC. But with the VPN option, i assume something has to be

manually done to reconnect like typical remote users?

I would probably go down the ADSL modem to ADSL modem route.

I assume what i would do for example is say...

First Site PDC: IP: 192.168.20.1

Create a new site with an IP of 192.168.30.0/24

In RRAS, create a route that says, for all tracking looking for these

address's, destination is the Remote Site ADSL Modem at 83.104.126.5 for

instance.

Then at the remote site RRAS, say anything looking for the 192.168.20.1

address should go to the First Site PDC ADSL Modem Address.

Then both Modems configured to pass on necessary requests to their connected

servers?

Lucky i will be able to build this and test it in house before roll-out, due

to us having two independant ADSL lines so i can simulate a remote link.

Thanks.

Re: AD Site Links - What Ports?

Hello Chris,

Just create the VPN to reconnect. Here you can find in detail what you need

to setup:

Site to Site VPN:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/74f65f37-9482-4316-a2e9-4e1e295457d71033.mspx?mfr=true

Example VPN's:

Remote Access VPN's:
