Hi!!

I have recently moved to uni and have needed to connect to the internet through a port in my room. i bought an ethernet cable (one recomended by the uni) and internet works fine... until i adjust my screen slightly or move my laptop across the room. this is very annoying especially when i want to be connected to the internet and have it on my lap.

i changed the cable and have had the exact same problem. there is nothing blocking the connection pins in the port or on the cables.

also i updated the network adapter driver yesterday and that had no effect.

this is now beginning to get rather frustrating as i dont understand what the problem could be.

i have an advent laptop with windows vista home premium.

i have experienced no problems like this until moving to uni as i usually use wireless at home.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks.

More than likely there is a slight loose connection with the Ethernet port on the lappy, its common when using cables and sitting the lappy on your knee as the end of the wire bends inside the lappy causing an issue.

Not much you can do unless you get a USB dongle for the internet

Just thought of another fix - if the socket is a bit loose, which as Dalo says is probably the case, buy a PCMCIA or Expresscard to ethernet adapter. That will give you a new fully working ethernet socket.

If you tell us the make/model of your laptop someone will be able to fish out a suitable card.

that sounds like a good idea as its really annoying me.

my laptop is and advent 6552.

will it just slot into the space on the side of the laptop where a plastic card is?

thanks for your quick replies Synapse and Dalo!! :)

BTW, I had a lappy do that because the latch in the socket was broken so the cable didn't stay all the way home in the socket.

This link says you have an Expresscard slot

I'd get something like this

Belkin Gigabit Ethernet ExpressCard | Ebuyer.com

But from ebay as it is half the price, like this

Belkin Gigabit Ethernet ExpressCard? on eBay (end time 21-Oct-10 15:39:49 BST)

Also, maybe consider having a look around for a cable that is more flexible - some are made of a really tough plastic sheath, others are made of a very flexible, almost rubbery covering - probably the better type for you.
