Guest Eddie Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Hello, I am planning to upgrade 2 DC's running 2000 standard to 2003 standard r2. These servers are the PDC and BDC of the domain and the only servers still running windows 2000 left in the domain. I've been running in mixed mode for a couple of years and have upgraded all other servers except for the 2 DC's. I am also running an exchange 2003 server in this environment. I have download the following document http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379 should these instructions be sufficient for what I want to accomplish? Thanks, Eddie
Guest Jose Alves Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 RE: 2003 Server and domain upgrade from Server 2000 Hello. Yes, that instructions are ok. You will substitute de hardware? or do you want to do the upgrade in the existing servers? If it´s the last option i think that you should do the folowing: 1. Make a full backup of the disks in both servers(with ghost or a tape with disaster recovery, for example). 2. Check the server that have the 5 roles and DNS server (both servers sould be DNS servers integrated in AD). 3. if not, transfer the roles to the server with Exchange 2003 and run the adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep command built in the windows 2003 r2 CD. 4. Run dcpromo in the server that does not have exchange, to remove the information of this DC in AD 5. i advice to perform a clean instalation of windows 2003 server R2 in the server that does not have exchange. 6. join the recently instaled windows 2003 r2 server to the domain as a member server 7. run dcpromo in windows 2003 and promote to DC to existing domain and install DNS (replicate with existing DNS in old windows 2000 server). then do the same to the other server, but be careful with exchange database. there are some tools as exmerge that can help you to migrate the mailboxs it should work. Guest Meinolf Weber Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Re: 2003 Server and domain upgrade from Server 2000 Hello Eddie, Is one of the DC's the exchange server? If yes think about moving it to another MEMBER server. MS does not recommend exchange running on a DC. Guest Eddie Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 RE: 2003 Server and domain upgrade from Server 2000 Jose just to clarify, I am doing an inplace 2003 server upgrade to both of the 2000 server domain controllers. Exchange 2003 is running on a 2003 member server. This being said what should I do if anything in addition to the intsructions I have downloaded? Guest Meinolf Weber Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 RE: 2003 Server and domain upgrade from Server 2000 Hello Eddie, If on the exchange nothing will be changed that should be enough, also the first you can do is just check with adsiedit.msc if the 3 attributes are mangled, if they are correct, you can run adprep command. - On the 2000 server open DNS management console and check that you are running Active directory integrated zone (easier for replication, if you have more then one DNS server) - run replmon, dcdiag and netdiag on the old machine to check for errors, if you have some post the complete output from the command here or solve them first - run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep from the 2003 installation disk against the 2000 server with the schema master role, with an account that is member of the Schema admins, to upgrade the schema to the new version - make sure the 2000 servers are fully patched before starting Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > Jose just to clarify, I am doing an inplace 2003 server upgrade to > both of the 2000 server domain controllers.
