Help or advice please.

I have an Advent laptop,Windows Vista, wireless connection to a Belkin with a BT landline, AOL are the ISP.

When I try to connect to the i/net it takes an age then 'times out' with the usual message of no i/net connection.

I have done the usual checks and the laptop says it is connected (local and internet) with a signal strength excelent. I also have a wirless printer connected to the Belkin, and this prints from the laptop no problem.

I have also re-booted the Belkin, all 4 lights flash intermittingly, hoewever, every now and again all 4 lights seem to freeze.

I have Norton Security insatlled and this updates regularly, though not as often as before.

Sorry for the Gettysburg address, but can someone please help as to why the i/net will not run.

Thanks in advance

First things first, connect with an Ethernet cable and see if you can access the internet (this will rule out the router and the ISP)

If it does connect with an Ethernet, then you either dont have the correct credentials inputted for the SSID and passphrase (for the security) although as it shows connected (connected to yours I hope and not the first one without security )

Have you configured the router yourself or did you just run a wizard or did BT set it up?

Hi Dalo,

Got on to AOL helpdesk to see if they could sort it out. After 1 hour they decided it was the Belkin router that was at fault.

I have tried the cable and it made no difference. Still could not connect to the internet.

My neighbour configured the router for me using the CD rom supplied.

Ok before we try anything else, go into device manager from control panel > system > device manager.

and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks on the network adapters.

Thanks Dalo,

Will try that tonight and keep updated.

Sorry, but I have to log on this site via my work PC, then transfer ideas to my home PC at night.

Cheers

Hi Dalo,

Went to laptop to do as you suggest, and hey presto, all is working again.

I think it had a funny five minutes, or rather funny five days.

This problem will occur again soon I suspect, so in the near future I will update the router and change over to BT.

Many thanks for your input.
