old pc new dvd drive, won't work?

hi all, im new on here hoping to get a little help. I have an old pc with only one cd drive on, I got a second hand dvd rw drive but after i remove the cd drive and replace it, after i turn the pc back on the boot screen comes on the the screen goes off and i have to turn the pc off by the button. thanks for your time for reading this.

Do you know for a fact that the used optical drive was in working order?

yes it was, my pc has only one port for the drive, so i need to remove the old one.

Is the drive a SATA or IDE drive

SATA is a thin connector and IDE is a longer (about 5CM)

OK, so on the ribbon that connects the optical there are 3 sections, the part that connects to the MOBO (Motherboard) and then there are 2 more the one furthest away from the MOBO is the MASTER and the one in the middle is the SLAVE

 

Now the MASTER/SLAVE must also match the setting on the back of the optical drive (CS will just default the drive to whatever place it is located on the ribbon)

 

* If you are using an IDE HDD (Hard drive) then the HDD should be set to MASTER and the optical to SLAVE, and correspond with the ribbon sections

its an old computer running windows xp, case only has one bay for the cd drive so i took the old cd drive out and put the new dvd drive in, just tries to load but screen goes off.

Ok, and if you put the old drive in and connect it all up, it starts ok?

 

Then the new optical drive is dead

yeah when i put the pld one back in it all works, is there a chance that the pc is too old for the drive?

No, they use the same interface, and as long as it gets picked up from windows additional drivers may be installed (but very doubtful) the problem is that you cant even get that far.

 

Have you checked that the master/slave settings match the old drive?

yeah i put all the parts in the same place with each, it turns on then just crashes

i took the drive back to the shop but they showed it working and would not exchange it

Ok, the one on the right (the new one) is missing the jumper the small plastic bit that sets it to master/slave.

 

They both use ATA so there shouldn't be an issue.

i only have one little plastic bit, so i swap it to the new one but still no luck

Ok, there should be diagrams on the top that tell you where to put the pin for master/slave dont assume they are the same orientation as they often aren't.

 

Check the diagram on the new drive and match it with slave.

 

When you connect the new drive does the screen not even POST which brings up all the BIOS information and normally the MOBO manufacturers logo?

even matching the symbols to the old drive it does not load even to the BIOS menus just a blank screen, but the drive will open when pressed to.
