So gutted, my HP DV9000 just slid off the arm of the chair and landed right where the power jack connects. Part of the jack plug is stuck inside the socket and I can't get it out.

I tried to plug it back in before I realised what the damage what and it made a sound which I can only describe as 'electrical', and now it won't power on even though the battery is okay. No lights, no sounds!

Have I fried something permanently and if so would I be able to replace the parts myself? I have some experience building desktops ages ago and replacing HDDs, RAM etc. but no expert.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction, having to post from my tiny ideapad!

I very much doubt it, It sounds like you have fried something as you thought...

Is it under warranty? house insurance?

Other than that I would honestly say its toast, you could try and remove the part thats stuck (normally the circular tube part with a pair of tweezers or plyers) and then try and power it up as it may be causing a short on the board.
