KenB Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Hi and welcome to fpch. Start > Control Panel > Power Options Under "Power Schemes" set the options at the bottom "Monitor" ...."Hard drive" etc. to Never. You need to click on the little arrow to do this. When you have made the changes click on Apply / OK Let us know if this helps. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Oldmotherhubbard Posted October 15, 2010 Author Posted October 15, 2010 Hi can you please tell me, in simple terms please, what could be causing my monitor to switch off completley yet the tower is still running. I realise now reading that again I wasn't expilcit enough (A senior Moment) my monitor switched off when I am in the middle of doing work or trawling the net, for no apparent reason. Yesterday on one of it's "on" times everything on the screen magnifyed and a message said the Dispaly Driver has ceased to operate correctly please reboot. I did this and the the blessed thing closed down on me! Left it until this morning and the graphics are weird no boxes around the desktop icons etc. I am operating on Xp Sony Vaio Quote
KenB Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Hi again, You could be having problems with the Video Driver or Video Card itself. Hopefully it is just the driver. Start > Run ....type in .....devmgmt.msc .....ENTER Click the + next to Display Adapters. Are there any yellow exclamation marks? What is listed? Is there a model number for your Vaio? Pixelkitten Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Also, how old is this monitor? If you are using an old CRT-monitor, it might simply be to old to work. I've often encountered people who've bought a new computer just a year ago, but still use the same monitor as they used ten years ago. It could also, as KenB says, be a driver issue, or a broken card. A rather rare error, but still possible, would be if your powersupply is damaged and is incapable of supplying power to your computer and your video card at the same time. Dalo Harkin Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 If it states the driver and it stops working then so will the monitor... you need to tell us the make and model of the PC or the add in card you are using, it will be listed as KenB says under device manager from within the control panel> system section Sounds like the driver has become corrupt and is an easy fix with the uninstallation/installation of a newer one Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
