help in startup

[Guest ineedhelp]

when i open up my pc it comes to the first screen, it used to go on to the

next screen but now it stops and doesnt go farther and now a little yellow

box appears at the bottom with a drawing of what looks like a skeleton

key-how do i fix it???

Could you post back with the model fo your computer please?

 

You have not given much info...but it seems not to be detecting your

harddrive.

If that's the case you'd need to go into the bios and see if it's detected.

 

Many machines require you to hit the <delete> key to do so

but it can vary.

 

Also, do you see a message such as "Hit <del>" to enter setup ?

It appears that your machine has reverted to its default BIOS setup,

possibly because of a flat battery, and the default requires you to enter a

password before the machine will boot. Unless someone has been fiddling

with the system, this password will be the default. You can google using

the machine or motherboard brand name and "BIOS password" and probably find

the default, or you can search for the original documentation and it may be

listed there.

and it used to say hit "fn"and"F2" to

go to setup but now it doesnt

The battery is ok it charges....as for googling for that it doesnt load up to

the desktop screen it stays at that screen and doesnt go any farther

also it doesnt go to the password screen stays on one of those black startup

screens this one says "KB...etc. ok" at the top and at the bottom there is a

line w/ some numbers under it-it used to say press "FN-F2 to enter setup" now

I assumed that since you could post messages to this message board then you

had internet access to do a Google search. If that's not so, it's going to

be tricky. Do you have the original documentation provided with the

machine?

 

The battery I'm referring to is a small low-voltage battery that maintains

power to the memory that holds the BIOS settings. When it goes flat the

BIOS forgets its settings and reverts to its default, which in your case

appears to be to require a password. The password is requires is usually

very obvious.

yes, no other characters do not appear its on the screen before that. i think

i know what battery you mean how would i fix it the pc i am trying to fix is

not the same one im using to post this,so ill try to google it

I'm not sure googling it is going to help much, as it's not a common

computer make or model and there doesn't seem to be much information

available about it.

 

The key symbol tells me the machine is locked for some reason, and that in

turn leads me to guess that the BIOS password is active, and that could

happen if the BIOS backup battery has gone flat and the default mode of

operation for that BIOS is to require a password. That's quite a string of

maybes, and you need some proper documentation for the machine in order to

confirm them.

 

If the battery is flat then it needs to be replaced, but that doesn't help

you since you will still need to get past the password (if that's the

problem).

 

Here's one from left field - some systems will not boot if the case is open.

If this was the problem you would be able to see one or more small switches

mounted near the lid or removable panel with wires leading back to the

motherboard.

 

Other than that, it's a matter of finding someone familiar with that

particular machine.

well i googled it any way and it came up but the pages i found were just for

selling stuff for my pc i also have 3-4 other laptops and would like to ask

about problems w/ them-whats it mean when it says disk controller failure and

wont start up??

You should start a new question as a new thread, but disk controller failure

means exactly that - the system has detected that the disk controller has

failed, and as a result it cannot read the hard disk drive.

Yes, you hadn't said it was a laptop until you mentioned the battery

charging OK - as you've guessed, it's not the main battery.

 

How to fix it - you have two problems (three if it's an obscure sort):

 

1. You have to figure out how to open it up to find where the cell in

question is. (The 'net may help, but you probably need a service manual,

which are often not as freely available as ordinary manuals.) Just hope it's

not soldered in when you get there ...

2. As Jeff has said, you need the password even after you've replaced the

battery (probably a cell actually). Unless you're lucky and it only defaults

to needing the password when the cell is flat - or there's a link on the

board that lets you in.
