compaq N410c 1.2hz 256mb 20gb dvd 12" small laptop

Had my evo N410C laptop since Aug 2008. (opeerating sytem windows 2000......i know, but was fine for my uses? ;)) Has been working fine the last time it was used, a couple of weeks ago, but I always needed to charge it overnight before it would switch on.

I have a buyer for it, so decided to fire it up to get my files transferred.

Charged it up overnight as usual but when I went to switch it on there is nothing. It won’t switch on! It’s now been on charge all day as well as all night...still nothing.

I can hear the power making a ticking noise, so presume the power is going through, but before I take things further and replace anything, just wondered if anyone has any suggestions... do you think it may be the power pack or battery problem? I did buy a new battery for this machine in Aug 2008, and the machine has had very little use. Would appreciate any help/advice if possible?

Cheers Shelly

No the light is not coming on ontop of the laptop. The power pack ? , between the plug and the laptop is warm.

The clicking sound sounds like it is coming from the laptop untill you pull out the power pack yellow plug that goes into the laptop, then it stops. Does that make sense?

It sounds like the power supply may be fried and not supplying any power to the machine. It may be worth trying to get your hands on another (perhaps borrow one) and see if that solves the problem. They are normally fairly generic. Just make sure the numbers (voltage etc.) on yours matches the substitute. If the connector is the same you should know right away.

Otherwise just take it to any computer store and simply ask them to plug it in for you. If they charge you for that they are jerks. If it powers up they can sell you a new converter.

Actually the guy who wants to buy it has these machines himself and he wanted similar for his daughter. Thankfully it's an uncle, so I'll try plugging his in and taking it from there.

Thanks so much for your time. I will let you know what the outcome is.

Much appreciated shelly :)

No problem that is the best possible. Do let us know but I am betting on that being the case otherwise it is in the machine and we will wait for a hardware expert to weigh in on this. If that does not work it may be just the connection on the laptop side.
