Hello,

I am ordering my first new server. I need to get Server 03 due to the

application we are planning on running.

this is my first server config.

Due to the nature of the application, I had to order 8 hard drives.

drive 0,1 = raid 1

drive 2, 3 = raid 1

drive 4,5 = raid 1

drive 6,7 = raid 1

Ihave never created a RAID config before. I have a raid card ordered with

the server.

when and how is the best time to create the raid array and the partitions on

the drives?

when I connect all 8 drives, will the system ask me if i want to create a

raid?

Hello WORLDe,

If you specify vendor, type and model from the server would be easier.

Best regards

I don't understand why due to the nature of the application you need to

configure 4 mirroed sets. Personally myself I would only use RAID1 on my OS

and then configure the reamining 6 drives as RAID5 striped set.

Hello,

It is a HP ML350 Tower server.

Re: New Server in Company

Hello WORLDe,

With HP it is really easy, with every server you get a SartStart disk. Start

the server with it and open the Array configuration utility. Here you can

configure the server like also AllenM describes. A mirrored drive RAID1+0

with 2 disks and the rest of the disks as RAID 5. On the mirrored disk install

the system and applications at least on a 40 GB drive so you have space for

the future, if you maybe upgrade to server 2008 where at least 40GB is recommended

for system drive.

Best regards

Re: New Server in Company

Will this also allow me to do the RAID 1 for the remaining drives?

I am installing a Progress Database server which uses the Progress 4GL

programming language and is very particular with the way the drives are

configured.

Re: New Server in Company

Hello WORLDe,

The configuration was just a suggestion. You can also configure any RAID

with the amount of disks SmartStart will offer you. Just try it out, that's

the best on new machines you can not destroy anything. Also this Smartstart

disk will let you preconfigure the serila number and and setup from one point.

After that it will copy the disk and starts the install directly.

Best regards

Re: New Server in Company

Pardon my confusion but I am a bit lost as to what you're saying and what

you want to accomplish. First of all I'm curious as to why you want to

configure 4 x RAID1 arrays on your system. Secondly I'm curious as to what

type of RAID controller you have with the system. Does it support and allow

4 RAID arrays? Do you have more than 1 RAID controller? Can you expand on

the requirements needed for this database server? What are the drive specs,

type and size?
