Heya guys.

I've owned a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (running Windows XP) for about a year and three quarters, but this morning it quite out of the blue decided to pack up. Basically now, I cannot load the laptop properly, and whenever it gets to the Windows XP loading page (the one with the green scrolling bar) it goes onto a blue screen, and gives a message saying that Windows has been shut down to prevent damage, and then gives the 'technical information':

*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82E43940, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

I can't even load Windows in safe mode or anything, which has made trying to restore the Windows setup impossible (I believe), and if that wasn't enough, my restore disk (which might help Windows to load?) is a few hundred miles away back home.

If anyone out there has any idea how to fix this, or why its happening I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Matt

A stop error is a catch all error, it could be anything.

What I would normaly do is salve the drive upon a goodmachine and run a disk check.

You could try it from the recovery console - just boot from your xp disk and select recovery console when it asks. When you get to the command prompt - chkdsk /p you may want to do a fixboot and fixmbr while you are at it.

Hope that helps.

Sounds like the NFTS file system on your hard drive has screwed up - normally in this case i would save myself expense and just wipe the hard drive and format it and start again if scandisking it does not work. For all you know a virus might have attacked the system and caused it to mess up the operating system.
