AVG8.0 has treated the AsusUpdate (7.13.04 ) as a trojan (a back door

trojan). When I download the latest version or update it via the AsusUpdate

program, it is locked by AVG as an threat alert !!!

Thank you for sharing this information. Have you let AVG know about this

false-positive?

1320:

AVG detects infection on file that I suppose to be clean

In case AVG Free detects some file on your PC as infected, this file was

moved to AVG Virus Vault, and you are sure that this file is correct and

clean, it is possible that the detected file is a false alarm. If so, we

shall prepare the correction as soon as possible. Unfortunately, false

alarms do appear from time to time in every Anti-Virus software.

To solve the problem, please send us this file for analysis directly

from the AVG Free program this way:

Open AVG Free User Interface.

Choose the "Virus Vault" option from the "History" menu.

Select the false positive file (one click) and click on the "Send to

analysis" button.

Fill in your e-mail address

Confirm the dialog

This way file will be sent to our virus specialists for analysis and we

will inform you about the result.

I loaded it and got 3 false positives in minutes. Programs that were

years old. I dumped it within hours. I've moved to Avast as so many

people have suggested it is comparable.

You're asking about AVG 8?

YES, it does and it's user-configurable.

Yes, I did think it was an improvement over 7.5. My only issue was the

false positives. I marked a few as "don't treat this as a virus" or

whatever, but I just didn't want to waste the time doing it goodness

knows how many more times. I guess lazy. I'm not saying its bad, I

just want to say they are a bit more over zealous. But I guess in the

long run that's not the worst thing to happen to you in life. Sure

better than letting anything leak through by a far cry.

The only problem I had here was with its Resident Shield which

monitors changes to programs.

Right after I installed it, I had problems with Microsoft Outlook. I

would often have to close Outlook and re-open it to get it to work.

Seems that the Outlook.pst file was "locked" by AVG somehow and

Outlook couldn't use it.

I configured it to NOT monitor anything in the Outlook directory and

all has been well.

Is that English you are trying to use?

1. This is a program that is TOTALLY seperate from the XP OS.

2. It's not even produced by Microsoft.

YOU are wrong. Care to try again? Next time, try to be more literate

Yes, I need more input to perfect the filter. I'm not up to installing

Jerry, I am certainly having a bad experience since installing the commercial

version of AVG 8.0. It wiped out my 7.0 MSN Messenger and I had to download

and install the new windows live messenger. Now I am having trouble opening

links to this newsgroup after receiving an e-mail in my MSN Premisum, plus I

am having trouble opening power point program and WMV file. I did not have

this trouble before installing AVG 8.0. I think it is a crappy program and I

wish I would have kept AVG 7.0 until they got all the bugs out of the newer

program.

I would uninstall then reinstall using custom options

Uncheck email, uncheck office, uncheck toolbar.

And do this:

If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner

component,

I am still using 7.5, just some suggestions I have found to do before I

Re: AVG 8.0

mae, thanks for your information. For some strange reasons after I was

notified in my MSN email that my question had been answered I was able to

click on it and return to you answer in this forum. I have not been able to

do that before after installing AVG 8.0. Now if I was just able to open the

power point file being sent to me as well as the WMV files I would be back in

business like when I had the AVG 7.5 version. I do not have any problems

opening the power point files I had stored on my computer prior to the

installation of 8.0. This would indicate to me that something is happening to

the files coming into my MSN Email but I have not found anything yet that

would cause it. I do have a question in to the AVG technical team but it

takes them so long to answer. The last time it took them over a week to get

back to me. I was hoping that some one on this forum may had this problem

before and found a cure. Thanks mae, I will consider what you have advised.

By the way I did not install the AVG tool bar.

Wayne, FWIW, I have been a avid user/fan of AVG for years now but with the

"upgrade from version 7.5 to 8, it has caused more problems than it has

fixed. EX: conflicts with other Spyware programs, false positives, etc...

After speaking with many people on Security Forums , reading online

professionial and user reviews incl: http://www.VirusBulletin and

av-comparatives.org then installing and testing a few myself, including

AVG8, I uninstalled AVG and now have gone to Avira Antivir. It is easier, it

is a simple straight forward AV with no extras to bog down your system and

has real tech support on it's online forum. Best of all, it's free. I dont

work for them btw, just recommending them to everyone I know.

Thanks marx. I will give it consideration. I have the commercial version of

AVG Antivirus which cost me $42.00. Hopefully they will find, and remove some

of the bugs out of it. At least for the last two times now, I have been able

to click on this link in my MSN e-mail and come back to this answer. For some

unknown reason I could not do that before. If I can figure out a way to open

the WMV files I receive I will be ok. Since I also upgraded to windows live

messenger from MSN Messenger I am beginning to wonderif that may be my

problem. The only thing that is strange is I do not have any problems opening

WMV or power point files that I had saved on my computer before installing

AVG. and windows live messenger so I don't really know which one to blame.

Although I do know that AVG did screw up my MSN Messenger and that is the

only reason I changed to windows live messenger.
