hooky Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I have just re-installed XP Pro onto my iMedia 5064, now when I shut it down it reboots itself, I have tried the PB Helpdesk and they just said it was a faulty motherboard, As it was working Ok before I installed XP I don't think it is the motherboard, more likely I have deleted a driver, I had no sound as well but I found a driver for that problem, PB wanted £50 for a restore disk. Has anyone any ideas? Les Quote
Synapse Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 XP Pro wasn't standard build on that machine was it? Do you have the original XP Pro or a borrowed/copied/downloaded version? Download & install all of the drivers from the PB website, including chipset. If it is still the same, try another wipe/reinstall. TBH, it could be a motherboard fault on that age of machine. You can sometimes find old stock unused boards on ebay for £20 or less. Quote
hooky Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 The COA on the machine was for XP Home, the XP Pro version I've just loaded was a licensed version from a new disc (SP2) and I then downloaded all the updates from the Microsoft website including SP3. I had a look at the download section of the PB support site but it doesn't explain clearly the different files that can be downloaded, the sound file I used came from a disc that I down loaded 2/3 years age for a friend. So you think that I should download all the drivers and hope for the best, I have also wiped the hard drive and done another installation Quote
Synapse Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Don't install them all and hope for the best - it will go wrong if you do that. I looked at the legacy products, on the ftp site - is that where you went to? You really need the model number of the board you have in it, and the video - ie is it onboard or an addin card. PB's used codenames for their boards, and often you can see it written on the board if you shine a torch in the side of your unit. I think it is a SIS chipset, but its only a guess at the moment. I also think the board is one of these GA-8SIML rev 2.0, they called it Columbia or Columbia II Can you confirm any of that please. Quote
hooky Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 The mother board is a GA-8SIML rev 1.0 with onboard video 512mb ram Quote
Synapse Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Not far off then - I used to repair alot of these. Board spec is here UKT Support - Packard Bell Columbia Motherboard The Packard Bell ftp server seems slow tonight and I can't get to see the files I saw earlier today. Perhaps the easiest way to find the drivers is to go to the SIS website and use their identification tool. Support > Quote
hooky Posted October 30, 2010 Author Posted October 30, 2010 Thanks for the info, have downloaded all the drivers relating to the motherboard, still no joy, think I might trade it in for a new one Quote
hooky Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 Problem solved I decided to scrap the PC so I removed all the bits I thought I might be able to use, ie power supply, memory, hard drive, CMOS battery, DVD rom, as I had some time on my hands I thought I'd reassemble the bits, lo and behold when I switched it on, the PC started to boot up and when I shut it down it shut itself down. Must have been a bad connection on one of the leads, anyway it now seems OK Thanks for your help Quote
