I have a SBS 2003 R2 server that I can't boot without a boot floppy. Here's

what happened - I have a software mirror using SATA hard drives. Drive 0

failed so I created a boot floppy while I waited for the replacement drive to

arrive. I got the replacement drive and mirrored the system backup and set

the boot.ini to look at drive 0.

Something to note here Drive0 had a Dell Utility partion on it which wasn't

mirrored to Drive1 so it was lost. I'm not sure if this is part of my issue

and I haven't been able to find an answer on Dell's website.

Below is the boot.ini that I'm using on the floppy (that works). This is

also the SAME config I've saved to the boot.ini on the hard disk.

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small

Business Server" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What error do you get when you try to boot 0,0?

Did you set the partition active?

Re: Boot.ini problems

I don't get an error message when I boot other than the system saying there's

no bootable device (This of course is without the boot floppy). The disks

are dynamic (using Microsoft's software RAID) so no I have not marked the

primary partion as active.

Re: Boot.ini problems

Well to be honest I'm not sure how to mark a dynamic volume as active without

converting it back to a basic disk. My understand was once a disk was

dynamic you couldn't mark it as active (assuming it wasn't already set that

way). If you could provide the steps I will mark the partition as active.

Partitions are marked active, not disks (or volumes)

Re: Boot.ini problems

So how would you propose I mark the partition as active on the dynamic disk?

I read the article from the link you attached specifically "Marking an Active

Partition" but that option is not available for a partition that resides on a

dynamic disk.

Not being one on software raids, I'm not sure if diskpart would do it for

you.

I suppose it's possible you may need to break the mirror, start from scratch

making the partition active before you add it back into the mirror.

You definitely need an active partition to boot.
