No servers visible in TS Licensing

Recommended Posts

I have a Windows 2003 Terminal Server, Standard Edition SP2, it is in a

Workgroup, the only member, there is no Domain or AD. This is a

replacement server, virtualised in XEN on SLES 10 SP1, on new hardware.

Much faster than the old physical machine. TS Manager and TS Licensing

are on the same server.

Terminal Services is functional and has been for months. I thought now

is a good time to install the licenses. Opening up Terminal Services

Licensing I see no servers at all. Terminal Services Manager appears

to be happy.

Where should I be looking?

Thanks, Paul.

And when you connect to the server, from within TS Licensing?

Re: No servers visible in TS Licensing

Vera,

The response I get when I try connecting by name or either IP address

in TS Licensing is "Windows cannot connect to a licensing server" which

would be correct because there is no licensing server just yet.

How do I make it know it is the first TS server in this workgroup?

I'm not certain this is relevent but the old terminal server was in AD,

this server was only ever in a workgroup. I thought I'd downed the old

server before I installed TS on the new one but it is possible I did

not. However I did not attempt to connect to the old licensing server.

Paul.

Now you've lost me.

First you write:

>> > TS Manager and TS Licensing are on the same server.

which to me means that you have installed Terminal Services and

Terminal Services Licensing Service on a single server.

and then:

> "Windows cannot connect to a licensing server" which

So did you, or did you not install TS Licensing on the server?

And what exactly is your problem?

Re: No servers visible in TS Licensing

Yes I did install Terminal Services and Terminal Services Licensing on

the same new server.

My problem is I need to move the TS licenses to this new server,to do

this the new server must be visible in TS Licensing and it is not.

To put it another way, Terminal Services Licensing does not see the

Terminal Server it is sharing resources with on the same server. Nor

does it seem to see itself, the Licensing Server.

It seems to me either advertising is not happening or the TS Licensing

Server is not listening. I'm not sure how the process actually happens,

especially when both are on the same server.

Thanks, Paul.

Re: No servers visible in TS Licensing

You cannot move licenses from one TS Licensing Server to another,

other than by calling the Clearinghouse and get them re-issued for

installtion on the new Ts LS. So that your new TS LS doesn't see

the old one is not a real problem.

It should see itself, though. Did you activate the new LS?

Check if this helps:

Re: No servers visible in TS Licensing

No the TS Licensing Server does not see itself in the All servers group

nor can I connect to it. That was why I could not talk to the people

at the Clearinghouse, the visibility issue needs to be fixed first.

I did notice the faq underneath the one you pointed me to, the one

about determining if this was an enterprise or domain LS. I had a

look, the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermServLicensing\P

arameters does not exist on the TS Licensing server.

On checking Windows components it seems I did not actually install

Terminal Services Licensing, I think I must have presumed because the

TS Licensing app window was there I installed TS Licensing a few months

ago, live and learn.

Thanks Vera.

Re: No servers visible in TS Licensing

OK, now I understand the confusion in this thread :-)

The TS Licensing Manager application is by default installed on

every server, because you can manage TS licenses from any server.

But the TS Licensing Service must be installed as an optinal

Windows component.
