Terminal Services Licensing Conundrum

I have a TS licensing question I have yet to see answered, maybe someone here

can help.

All servers are 2003 Stabndard R2 SP2.

All clients are XP Pro SP2 or SP3

All TSCALs are device CALS.

We have two single domain forests with no possibility of establishing a

trust relationship between them.

All XP computers are members of domain/forest A and are currently able to

use TS without any issues. We wish to now put a TS up in domain/forest B and

allow XP computers from domain A to connect. I understand that we will need

a licensing server in domain/forest B which should be no problem.

Do I need to purchase TSCALs for domain B? All computers connecting already

have a TSCAL issued from domain A.

If these domains are in the same company, there's no need for additional

CALs.

As long as each XP computer continues to visit TSs in both domains, they

will be able to connect without a problem.

Re: Terminal Services Licensing Conundrum

You will need to purchase CAL if you're unable to override terminal

services licensing in domain B to point to license server in domain A.

There are several ways to do this, via VPN, via regular network connection

(check http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832017 and then search

TermServLicensing for what ports would need to open for licensing service

to communicate)

Just to be certain. Even though the two forests are completely air gapped

when a user takes a laptop from domain A and connects it to a TS in domain B.

It will not request another license since it will have a valid license it

received from domain A. Also as a followup question. If I decide to

purchase some more TSCALs since I'm starting to run a little low. If I

purchase Server 2008 TSCALs will they be able to be installed on a 2003

license server?
