Jellybeans27 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Hi all, Two weeks ago I booted up my computer, logged on fine etc etc. However when I try and open any programs like firefox, itunes, or even disk cleanup I get this: http://img528.imageshack.us/i/img00011201010310036.jpg/ImageShack: Host and Share your Photos and Videos - img00011201010310036.jpg ImageShack: Host and Share your Photos and Videos - img00008201010302127.jpg ImageShack: Host and Share your Photos and Videos - img00007201010302121.jpg ImageShack: Host and Share your Photos and Videos - img00006201010302112.jpg ImageShack: Host and Share your Photos and Videos - img00001201010302105.jpg So I booted up in safe mode, had a fiddle with other boot modes, and managed to use CCleaner to get rid of loads of temporary files. I then installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, however the application file would not run, the computer would just do nothing (not even show an error). I then uninstalled quite a few applications that I haven't used in years. Then all of a sudden, the computer seemed fine and back to normal again - I could surf the net, load (some) applications, etc. However, none of my programs would update, I tried updating McAfee and it wouldn't, it would just come up with a 'this page cannot be displayed', and nor would any other programs. 5 minutes later, it all came back and I have not been able to put it right since. The frustrating thing is that once I can get applications running, I should be able to sort it out with antivirus etc. Any idea what this could be? A McAfee scan showed no threats at all. Here are the computer specs for reference: Windows XP Home SP3, AMD Athlon XP 2400+, 2.0gb RAM. Will. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Hi, at this point will Malwarebytes run now or not? Also try installing Superantispyware and see if that will run also. Get Superantispyware from here click the red free edition button. SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware! If neither will run it suggests malware is preventing those programs from running. Do you get any pop up windows telling you to run their versions of antivirus, and asking for cash? If so you definitely have malware and I suggest looking in our malware removal section for further help. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. DSTM Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 I am thinking this is a corrupt rundll32.exe File. I would backup all Data, then do a Repair Install, unless you are familiar with the Registry.:) Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
RandyL Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Hi everyone. I'm thinking this might be one really messed up system. If you look really close you will see part of the Limewire icon at the left of this screenshot just below the error. You might have to magnify it to 150%. ImageShack: Host and Share your Photos and Videos - img00001201010302105.jpg God only knows what else is on this system or what may have been done to ATTEMPT to fix it. I'm moving this thread to the Malware section just in case there might be any possibility of fixing it. In the mean time file sharing or P2P is one of the best ways of getting into this situation. Uninstall all such programs and never use them again. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Starbuck Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I have to agree with the popular consensus..... God only knows what else is on this system or what may have been done to ATTEMPT to fix it. I would backup all Data, then do a Repair Install If ordinary programs are not opening due to the errors, we're not going to be able to run any tools to help fix the problem. Quote Member of:UNITE
