Anybody successful with SP3?

I've seen nothing but complaints on this NG this week. Before I even start

to think about installing it, I'd like to hear that at least some people

were successful.

Seven installs and no issues beyond the Outlook Express compact

folder on close/switch identity problem. This NG is like an ER you

won't generally find "Works/No Issue" type postings here. As with

any major OS change having a proper backup or image significantly

lowers your risk when installing a Service Pack. From what info I've

read the biggest issue with SP3 is some problems with systems that

use an AMD processor. The possible combinations of hardware &

software make it impossible to have a Zero issue SP release. As

more and more users install it the list of known issues will become a

little clearer.

Worked like a charm <whatever THAT means>.

You will hardly see lauds in a group like this, just complaints. They

are few compared to the user base at large.

Mine was successful, but I had to go through this link as opposed to Windows

Update...still don't know why. WU didn't work but this one did...and a few

days later...still no problems.

I installed it on my computer, then on my wifes. Straightforward

"glitch-free" installations both times - no problems since.

Installation seemed okay on a test computer until reboot.

Upon reboot I get an error message related to wlanapi.dll.

Error message reads:

"AirGCFG.exe - Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be

located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll"

This appears to be a problem with the new version of this dll installed by Microsoft SP3 over the

version installed by Dlink for my wireless NIC. (Several others reporting the same problem with

Dlink wireless NICs)

I get the same error message with every boot, but the wireless card connects and work.

I have written to Dlink and will post the answer as soon as it becomes available.

You didn't read closely. There are posts in this ng this week reporting

success. Most folks would not bother to report success. Generally, posts

in the ngs are about problems. After all the ngs are all about getting

help.

I have installed SP3 on about a dozen copies of XP without any issues.

There you have it.

Sure. That shouldn't be surprising. People without problems don't

often come to a newsgroup just to state that. It's those *with*

problems who come to look for solutions to them.

I've installed it on two computers here. No problems at all.

It worked fine for me both at home and in several test cases at work

_of course_ you'll see complaints and problems about a major Windows XP

component in a newsgroup dedicated to helping people with Windows XP

problems. Whatever you decide to do, don't make the decision based on simply

seeing a few people here complaining, that would be like aliens landing in

the car park of your local hospital, sticking their heads through the

hospital door and concluding that every human on the planet is sick.

Re: Anybody successful with SP3?

1 problem deploying SP3 through WSUS3. The rest (about 5 other PCs) is fine

and they're manually patched.

I chose "Install Updates and Shutdown" option to launch SP3 installation. It

takes about 30 minutes to install after which the PC should turn off

completely.

Problem is PC goes back to logon prompt instead of shutting down completely

after SP3 installation completed. There's no indication of a restart either.

I'm going to do another test later. If I see the same problem, I can't

deploy WinXP SP3 thru WSUS. Gotta do it manually.

It's hard to know what people have as far as computers go so the

issues some are seeing might be caused by non-compliant apps or

drivers. I have had stellar success both at home and on well over 50

machines at my site.

Installed it a few days ago - no problems with the install and none

since. LOL - not sure what SP3 was suppose to accomplish, but ...

Re: Anybody successful with SP3?

Hi Norm,

I had no problem with the actual SP3 installation. It took about 15 minutes

and proceeded to install without any hitches at all.

However, I began losing connectivity -- I use a wireless Netgear adapter --

to the

Internet after installing SP3, although it hadn't been immediately apparent.

Earlier this week, I first thought it was due to AVG 7.5 / AVG 8.0 issues.

However, overnight I lost connectivity again for no apparent reason, and

after spending an hour this morning uninstalling/reinstalling AVG and the

Netgear software -- and still being unable to get Internet connectivity as

it looked...and looked...and looked to acquire an IP address -- I finally

just uninstalled

SP3.

I'll continue using SP2 for a while.

I have SP3 and I use a Netgear wireless USB adapter for my desktop...the

WG111T and it is working well. It connects to a modem/wireless router combo.

Re: Anybody successful with SP3?

Hi Just.some.guy,

I'm connecting to a Linksys WRT54g router.

The PC that I'm having the connectivity problem with is my main PC -- a Dell

E520 that uses a WG111 v2 54 Mbps adapter.

My 'spare' PC is an almost 7 year-old Dell 2300. That one has a Netgear

MA111 802.11b adapter, and so far that one is okay with SP3.

Go figure. :->

That should read: Great big hairpulling out sonofa b****in'

problem with those having an AMD Athlon 64 processor but a minor

registry fix after searchung this and many other sites using

Google to get it all sorted out. Other than that, it was a

breeze.
