I don't know, I did a fresh install, then sp2, then the update the

next day and all I can see is one sp3 entry in add/remove programs. I

don't know what the logic is in that.

Re: XP SP3 will not install

Have you disabled the sntivirus and spyware ?

Do that and also disconnect from the internet.

I have downloaded and installed it without any problem.

Also saved it on a stick and installed on another machine.

Cheers,

Farid

Re: XP SP3 will not install

Re: XP SP3 will not install

ok, i sent an email to them, this is what they sent back.

have not tried it yet. will do so in a couple of days.

Dear Truck,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support Service. My name is Jane,

and I am glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this

service request is SRX1066933843. You can contact me directly by writing an

email to v-30jaya@mssupport.microsoft.com with the case ID in the subject

line.

From your description, I understand that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)

could be downloaded without any problem. However, when trying to install it,

the error message "access denied" was received. All the antivirus programs

and anti-spyware program were disabled. Some people indicated that they had

to reformat and reinstall Windows XP to install SP3. Your computer is old and

do not have Windows XP CD.. If I have misunderstood your concern, please do

not hesitate to let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that

I will do my best to help you.

Before we go further, I would like to explain that we do not need to

reinstall the system. Let us perform the following steps to troubleshoot our

issue:

First, please make sure that your computer must at least be running Windows

XP with Service Pack 1 installed. If not, Windows XP SP3 could not be

installed. For more information, please download and refer to the Windows XP

Service Pack 3 Overview.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=68C48DAD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110&displaylang=en

We can perform the following steps to confirm whether SP1 or SP2 is installed:

===================

1. Go to "Start", click "Run", and type in "winver" (without quotation marks).

2. In the Version column, please check if Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2

is listed. If so, it indicates that Windows has been updated to SP1 or SP2.

If you have previous version of Service Pack installed yet, this type of

installation issue can occur if certain third party programs are running in

the background during the upgrade (especially third party firewall, antivirus

programs etc). I suggest we first perform the following steps to install

Windows XP SP3. If the issue also occurs with other updates after

successfully installing SP3, I will continue working closely with you to

resolve the issue.

The most likely cause is that the current user account does not have the

correct permissions to access related folders and registry keys.

I suggest we first try the steps below to reset the default permission on

those folders and registry keys, which will be accessed when installing SP3:

<<Reset_Subinacl.zip>>

1. Save the attachment of the email to your Desktop.

2. Right click on the "Reset_subinacl.ZIP file" and choose "Extract"

3. Follow the instructions to extract the files to your Desktop. There will

be two files (reset.cmd and subinacl.exe) extracted.

4. Double click the reset.cmd file

5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

Note: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished,

you will receive a message stating "Finished, press any key to continue".

After the above steps are finished, please, download the full installation

package of Service Pack 3 from the following website and save it to C:\ (The

root folder of partition C):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

If the download page could not be accessed, we could download the SP3 file

from the link below directly:

Windows XP Service Pack 3

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=90&p=&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsoft.com%2fdownload%2fd%2f3%2f0%2fd30e32d8-418a-469d-b600-f32ce3edf42d%2fWindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe

Next, let's restart the computer in Safe Mode using the following steps to

have a stable environment to install SP3:

1. Restart the computer.

2. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

3. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.

Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform

differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To return the system

back to Normal Mode, we can simply restart the computer.

Go to C:\ to find the full installation package file, which you just

downloaded, and then double click the file to initialize the installation.

Has SP3 been installed successfully? If not, please follow the steps below

to capture a screenshot if there is any error message.

Screenshot:

====================

1. Press PrintScreen (PrScrn) to capture a screenshot.

2. From Start, click Run, enter MSPAINT in the Open box, and then click OK.

3. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas.

4. From the File menu, go to Save and save as a JPG file to the Desktop.

5. Send it to v-30jaya@mssupport.microsoft.com as an attachment.

Then, please send me the SP3 installation related log files:

1. Click "Start", "Run", enter "%windir%" (without the quotation marks), and

then click OK.

2. Locate the files Svcpack.log and Setupapi.log in the opened folder.

3. Please send them to me at v-30jaya@mssupport.microsoft.com for further

research.

Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the

email application being used. Most applications will provide you with either

an "Attach" button or a Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file.

Once clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach

and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then

clicking on the "Attach" button.

Please try the above steps and inform me of the results at your earliest

convenience. If anything in my email is unclear or you have any questions,

please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thank you for your time. I am standing by for your reply.

Best Regards,

Jane
