SP3 installed via Windows Update disabled all apps

This is a post to inform of my experience.

The SP3 installed via Windows Update killed all my application

softwares. I attempted to repair by repair install of WXP with SP3

slipstreamed but the problem was not cured. I restored the WXP from its

backup and installed the SP3 from a downloaded standalone SP3 installer,

then no such problem happened.

Installed SP3 from WU, no problems like the ones you experienced . All

programs working as they were with SP2. Did not even disable AV or did a

backup. Can't understand why so many are having problems.

Did the same installation on a laptop Sony VAIO PCG-K33.

All I had to there was unplug, plug power supply and USB connection.

Re: SP3 installed via Windows Update disabled all apps

I'll tack onto this post with my experience.

I went to the Windows Update site, sat through the "checking your computer"

message for a few minutes.

Got a message about needing to update to SP3.

I said OK and the files were downloaded to my computer.

The update took place........over a half hour or so all told.

Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with my computer.

What did I do incorrectly?

You shouldn't have maintained your computer so well! :)

Well, a very significantly high percentage of WinXP SP2 users are having

problems. Your statement that YOU did not have problems should be

accompanied with an analysis of why YOU didn't have a problem, but

millions of other have had problems.

Was the download interrupted or the install interrupted that you know of?

Same here, Gord. Only strange hiccup was that mp3 files are now

associated with WMP rather than WinAmp -- easy enough to fix.

In my case everything went smoothly. download stated time as 25 minutes.

Right on. No hiccups. What I did right I have no idea, except to download

updates as they became available.
