I have just cleaned down my PC using my System Recovery disc due to poor performance. I have reloaded all of my standard software again but when rebooting I have had a blank screen on several occasions ie. no task bar or desktop. Just the background wallpaper. Continual reboots have eventually been getting the Desktop back but is becoming less successful and my most recent attempts have failed altogether.

I'm writing this on my laptop but will be heading off for 2 weeks (with laptop) and can't leave the household pcless.

Try this and see if it cures your problem.

When your blank desktop is loaded go to your Task Manager (Press ctrl + Alt =Del ) look in the Processes tab and see if you can find "exporer.exe" in the list of processes. If it is there highlight it and end the process at the bottom. If it is not there and I suspect it may not don't worry about it.

After you have either ended the process or not found it, go to "file" at the top of the Task manager and select New Task. When prompted type in the explorer.exe press ok and exit the task manager.

Does that solve your problem?

It doesn't matter what I press. I can't get anything on the screen. Can't display Task Manager or anything else for that matter I'm afraid. The only thing that works is the power button.

I was under the impression that you were getting a desktop with no icons or taskbar. I would suggest that you try going into safemode and attempting the same process. (If as soon as you start the machine you begin tapping the F8 key you should get to an advanced boot options menu. You could try last known good configuration and see if that does it, but assuming it does not select safemode and then try what I suggested above.) If you cannot get into safemode either then it will require a deeper look.
