Is there SP2 or SP3 in my computer?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I did not intend to install SP3 for a while cause SP2 was just fine.

However a message pop up asking me to install Mediaplayer 11. I

answered yes. After sometime I got another message telling me that

installation was not possible because of a file. I aborted the

installation and rebooted. Everything seems to be okay. But Oh

surprise MyComputer properties show SP3.v.3264 How comes?

What is weird is that SP2 vanished and there is no SP3 at Add or Remove

Programs. The question is Do I have a full SP3 or just a partial SP3

installation? How could I verify? How could I rollback?

Thank you.

From what I can tell - you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate

installed - a MUCH older Release Candidate no less. If I had to guess (and

I do) I would say you have had that installed for quite some time.

Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> identify XP SP3 (936929) and

remove it. (Make sure Show Updates is checked and look for the #.)

Otherwise - you can also get help through this channel:

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for

Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and

Maybe that occurred silently because I never installed SP3 and never

received request for such update. How this could happen?

As I told ALL updates disappeared from 'Add or Remove Programs'. The

only one in the list is KB915865. And there is no SP3 in that list.

I have had very bad experiences with MS support in the past.

Besides since the failed MediaPlayer update (occurred yesterday) I have

noted that online MS update no longer works. I tried MP again. The

update downloads and try to install but fails.

Another question: Should I risk another SP3 update? I have downloaded

WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe but I'm not sure if reinstalling is a

good idea or not.

Re: Is there SP2 or SP3 in my computer?

I didn't install SP3 let alone a Release Candidate. Common sense

dictates not to do it in a production computer.

Re: Is there SP2 or SP3 in my computer?

Not only could the SP3 RC not get installed silently, installing it required

a deliberate downloading of a script file before WU would even show it to

you.

Regardless, uninstall the current SP3 build pronto and either let WU offer

you the final or stay at SP2 for awhile and think about it, your choice.

You need to be aware that if you NOT uninstall now your computer will

regress to limited functionality soon because the RC is timebombed to expire

in a few more days. Get cracking. You really don't have a choice here.

Let them answer that one. You'll never know until you use the service.

Re: Is there SP2 or SP3 in my computer?

If you don't want to risk the SP3 upgrade then...well...don't. But get that

RC off of your system NOW. It is timebombed!

Re: Is there SP2 or SP3 in my computer?

So, will risk the upgrade. If anything fails then will reinstall

Windows. From now on I will never accept any online update from MS, as

I did for my Toshiba laptop.

If a garage does a lousy job servicing your car (and you don't know how to

do it yourself), do you stop taking your car in for service?

What are you talking about? I can fix my car down to the last nut and

bolt, that's not the same with M$ OS's. Besides I'm dealing with

computers since the Altair, so I'm not as neophyte as you think I am.

This way you're only filling your ego with gibberish. If you don't have

ideas or don't wish to help stop responding and move on.
