Richandlou1992 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Hi All, I am hoping you can help. My laptop is around 4 years old and I have had very few problems. However recently my free version of AVG flagged up there was a Trojan present. I googled how to remove this and it was suggested I install StopZilla. Since installing this program my computer will start and go in to the desktop, however only for a few seconds, until a blue screen appears and tells me it is going to 'Crash Dump', and suggests this could be a result of some new software. The computer then restarts and goes through this episode again and again. I opened the computer in safe mode and it works fine, I figured that StopZilla may have been the culprit so i have tried to remove it. However, when i try a box appears telling me the Windows installer service cannot be accessed? Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem would be very much appreaciated as I am pulling my hair out :confused: Many thanks in advance Richard Quote
PseFrank Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Hi Richard, welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Enter safe mode and see if you can right click on the StopZilla icon in the system tray. Select Exit StopZilla. Then go to Add and Remove Programs (Think the wording may be different in Vista) and see if you can remove StopZilla from your computer. Can you do a System Restore in Safe Mode to before you installed the program? If all else fails we'll send you to our Malware Removal forum. Richandlou1992 Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 Hi Frank, Thanks for your speedy response. I tried what you suggested. I presume the system tray is the icons on the bottom right of the screen, by the clock (my computer skills are pretty basic!). Anyway I attempted to uninstall StopZilla, after selecting 'Exit StopZilla' and the same box appeared telling me the windows installer service cannot be accessed. Any other suggestions? Also you mentioned a System Restore. As my computer skills are pretty basic i do not entirely understand how to do this, if you could give me some instructions (for a lamen!) would be appreciated. May I thank you again for your help, and I look forward to any further suggestions you may have!! Thanks Richard Quote
RandyL Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Have a look at this link for System Restore. http://bertk.mvps.org/html/restoresysv.html Keep in mind that you cannot undo a System Restore that is performed in safemode. RandyL Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 And if you can upgrade to IE8 it would be a good time to look for malware issues considering your posts. That's what I suspect. At least now it may be possible to deal with it since you can boot again. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else.
