XP Pro SP 3 Install Hang

I have tried to install SP 3 twice and it has hung both times. The progress

bar makes it as far as the "y f" in your files in the message.

I downloaded SP 3 andd created a cd from which the installs have been run.

The install proceeds normally and some where between 2-3 hours it asppearts

to be hung at the prior comment point. I reviewed the "Steps to take" doc

and all information in that doc does not apply.

I looked in the Event log and discovered an Event id 1002. Hanging app

iexplore.exe v 7.0.6000.16440 Hung module hungapp v 0.0.0.0 address 0x00000000

I started Task Manager for the second instance and noted that System idle

used 99% CPU, SP 3 software used 0% CPU, occasionally some tasks would

display for a short interval where the time was indistinguishable (task

manager just switched to the task).

The first instance Norton Internet Explorrer, Spy Sweeper and Defender werre

executing. The second instance the 3 programs were not executing.

I power off/on the system in order to recover from the hang and the SP 3

rolls back successfully.

Any idea how to resolve the problem?

Try installing in "Safe Mode".

For free help from MS for SP3 installation see:

https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

I suggest that you close all third party programs, especially AV and

antispyware programs, or simply try in clean boot mode which will shut down

all non-MS programs and services.

Uninstall IE7, install SP3, re-install IE7. If you manage to get SP3

installed and ever want to remove IE7, you won't be able to. This was

taken directly from Microsoft's Known Issues of SP3 page.

Try installing sp3 after shutting down your Virus/Spyware/Malware scanners.

Re: XP Pro SP 3 Install Hang

For those who commented on the removal of the AV programs. That was my

second attempt with the same result.

I will try Safe Mode and see what happens.

Subsequently, I discovered that I had a problem with Outlook - displayed

initial screen only no emails and no logon window. Eventually, I went to

safe mode, activated/closed Outlook, rebooted to normal mode and Outlook

worked.

I then tried to clean up the IE temp files and I never got the function to

end after 10 minutes or more. I canceled the delet temp files and deleted

all files manually (even had some problems with the deletion of those files

via Windows Explorer and empty the recycle bin. After I thought they were

all deleted, I went to Safe mode and the IE Temp deletion ran in about 10

seconds. So I do not know what the problems in this cycle are.

With the suggestion and link to send a problem report to MS, I did that and

waiting for a response from MS.

Re: XP Pro SP 3 Install Hang

Evening

Tonight I successfully installed SP3 from a cd built from the ISO image. SP3

was installed in Safe Mode. I ran both Spy Sweeper and Nooton Internet

security full system scans after I booted to normal mode. Several minor

oddities occurred in normal mode but nothing so far has halted the use of SP

3.

Thanks fior the directive to use Safe Mode. That was also one of the

directives from Microsoft.
