My daughters laptop screen works for about one minute but then goes very dim. She says she can just about make out what is on the screen if she tilts it at an angle.

She says that an IT "expert" where she works changed the light source but that made no difference. Until I actually see the laptop I can't even say if the source is working.

Any thoughts until then please?

Thanks.

Hi Key man10

This is a very difficult thing to diagnose over the internet. Certainly for me anyway. I'm guessing that the light source refered to will be the screen inverter, and that a technician has swapped the existing one for an inverter that he or she had to hand. But like I've said, thats only a guess.

The other thing to check for would be a badly connected or defective cable behind the screen. If you do remove the screen to check the cables, make a note of the screen details from the back of the screen. You may well need these details should you have to order a new one.

Sorry I can't be of more help...

I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :)

Yes, I appreciate it's a difficult one but I was hoping against hope there might be a known weakness.I'll have to wait until she brings it up for me to have a look at.

Thanks anyway.

I tend to agree with PseFrank that the most likely cause is the inverter based on the description that you have given. If the backlight had failed you would get either nothing at all or some light areas and some blacked out. Inverters usually will go well before a backlight. I assume that is the "light source" you mentioned.

Of course Frank is also right the there may be nothing wrong with the inverter beyond its connection but one way or another it would seem that the inverter is the culprit. She should ask the "IT expert" exactly what he actually changed.

I agree, typical symptoms of inverter failure. The light source cannot be changed in 99% of laptops as the backlight is built in to the LCD panel. A new LCD would be the only answer for a faulty backlight.
