I normally ftp to 2 sites. I have not been able to get 2nd site working in a

week. Any help would be appreciated.

I have double checked firewall settings and have tried to breathe life into

process by downloading a 3rd party app too.

I for some reason cannot get onto to my charter webspace which is causing me

fits.

overall location is ftp://webspaces.charter.net. It never comes back. What

I normally do is have a net place that goes right into my account at charter.

Error I get back is "Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed

the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.

Details: Operation timed out"

Charter has not been helpful. I really need to update info at this site.

I have tried plugging into cable modem direct too (bypassing router) no

luck. Only can get to one ftp site.

Thanks in advance for help.

Now that's a better address and seems to work. So what is the problem,

can you not log in? You're a bit short on info as to what the problem

is.

But on another note, they seem to imply using an FTP program and I

suggest Filezilla. It free. Sending files to your web space is easier

with FTP than doing it over internet explorer. Most providers do

provide a web page access, but I guess I fail to use them since I've

been doing it with FTP since the early 80's. You can with IE, but

you'll find it easier in the long run with an FTP program.

Re: ftp client is not working to all sites since 5/5/08

Al,

My issue is i cannot log in. My webpage at charter is something i have been

update weekly for about 4+years during the school year. I can get to webpage

to see content - just cannot login. I first tried Core FTP Lite and this am

tried Filzilla. I could not get Filezilla to work to either site but Core

Ftp worked to one of two.

So my issue is logging to my charter webpage. I cannot even get vanilla

webpage to respond. That is what you were sent to via

ftp://webpages.charter.net.

I dont see how filezilla works as a client it looks more to be a ftp server

application. I dont want to serve just move files to a server...

So what option did you have working in filezilla to get

ftp://webpages.charter.net to work?

We'll the login part I can't help you with. Other than you giving me

the login / password.. I guess you could but the world would know it.

Anyway, you can have charter reset it too.

Like any program, cuteftp, fillzilla, wsftp, any of them, whatever works

works. If you want to try that link in IE and get past that, then

you're good to try cute ftp, but yes, the login is an issue I don't know

how to get past.

I've had the same issue startup my Verizon acct. I had to reset one

account password cause I got something screwed up. Just could not get

past that login. So I reset it.

Oh, remember to try both name@charter.net or just name, some logins

demand the @ part of the account. Not always but some. Its worth a try.

Big Al,

I can reset password to account by myself and have done that several times

over the weekend. Dont know what issue is.

When I log in with Core Ftp Lite only good response is with site as a

http://account:password@webpages.charter.net. But with an Http connection i

cannot send files.

Otherwise twiddling with all setups parameters in that with

ftp://account:password@webpages.charter.net come back no good.

So how did you get a valid response with filezilla going to

ftp://webpages.charter.net? I cant figure out how to do it with filezilla -

like i said it looks an ftp server application...

Thanks for your help. I'll guess I can wait it some more. I'll be sure to

post back here if i figure it out.

Sorry, had to duck out for a few hours.

There are two major modes in ftp. Passive and active. Some programs

like windows FTP.exe does not allow you to adjust it. (wow, just went

through this with another person yesterday, what is with ftp all of a

sudden.).

Open filezilla and click File -> Sitemanager.

This is how you make sites. Click 'newsite'

GENERAL:

Host = webpages.charter.net

Skip port

Servertype is the default ftp - bla bla

Logontype = normal

user = your account name

password = your password

Put anything you want in comments.

ADVANCED:

you can fill in the local directory to start you anywhere in your pc

like C:\webpage

remote = / not \

TRANSFER SETTINGS:

now this is the iffy part. You will have to try with all 3 of those

radio buttons "mode" to find which works if any. work from right to left.

Hit OKay.

To connect you simply hit the little arrow just beside the site manager

icon (thats the first on the toolbar) and if you had 20 sites you would

get the list of sites and could just pick the one you want. You only

have one right now so the list is one long.

You should see the large box below there fill with conversation between

your pc and the host. The end result should be the two directory

trees, one of your PC on the left and one with the web page on the right.

You click on the + / - like any windows explorer to open and close folders.

Its a bit tricky to send files but ultimately you can double click on a

file (not folder) on either side and it will send the file.

From here you should just sit down and read the help. There is a

setting / options window to change things like "open last" or "remember

window settings" etc. You'll just have to play.

ANY ftp program is similar to this. WS_Ftp Lite was what I cut my

teeth on. But it was technically only free to students. I latched

onto this program and, well, it works. Once you get used to any

program you always go faster since you're used to it.

You can technically do this on DOS command line too. But you can't move

folders quite as easy as this will. GUI programs are much better an

moving entire directory trees.

Let me know how you come out.

Re: ftp client is not working to all sites since 5/5/08

Big Al,

Thanks for steering me to ftpzilla client. last time i grabbed the server..

At this point I cannot get ftpzilla to work with webpages.charter.net. I

have opened up

a disabled windows firewall to filezilla.exe

opened up my router to exposes its ip address to webpages.charter.net at all

ports

opened up router to machine behind it to webpages.charter.net at all ports

tried more than a few setting within ftpzilla to get its network wizzard to

pass. it still is failing on a 502 which points to an issue with firewall or

router.

so i have tried a bunch with no avail. I have read wiki pages on networking

with filezilla. must by my router is a problem. maybe later in day/night

i'll try pluging in to modem direct (bypass router).

RE: ftp client is not working to all sites since 5/5/08

It is working. Here is low down of last thing to fix it.

changed my router port forwarding for computers on lan. Used to have a

string of addresses that forwarded to and from wan site for charter. Fix was

to address each machine on lan side separately. Now filezilla works and

regular ftp://webpages.charter.net works...

Really odd - up til last monday i never had a port forward for my charter

ftp....

I am soo happy. Thanks Big Al for your patience and assistance.
