How to stop Windows Desktop Search from indexing Outlook messages

I keep going to "Windows Desktop Search" (WDS) Index Options and

uncheck Microsoft Office Outlook. But after a while I go back and see,

the check mark is put back on and the "Index these locations" includes

that again. Is there a way to prevent it from being indexed? Thanks.

I have other problems with WDS. For instance, some files are not

indexed. But I'll deal with that later.

Hi,

There is a group policy which can help you configure the WDS.

Following is the setting.

===================

Prevent Indexing of Outlook

Enabling this policy prevents the indexing of Outlook items.

In the Desktop Search options, the E-mail and hard drive and E-mail and my

documents options are dimmed. The custom folders option is selected. The user

does not see Outlook when the user browses through items to index.

When this policy is disabled or not configured, the user can choose whether

or not to automatically index Outlook. The default is to automatically index

Outlook. If you enable and then disable this policy, Outlook indexing remains

turned off until the user manually enables it.

====================

There are other group policies which can help in administration of WDS.

Thank you, Ashishsa. It took me a while to find desktopsearch30.adm.

That article doesn't say. But I had to download "WDS 3.01 for Windows

XP SP2" from

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/choose/windowsdesktopsearch.mspx?tab=Install%20It

and install it, and extract the files (with command

WindowsDesktopSearch-KB917013-V301-XP-x86-enu.exe /extract) and find

the .adm file under update subfolder of the extract file folder. Hope

it helps somebody else looking hard for the .adm file.

One more question. Where do I find "Prevent Indexing of Outlook" as

the quoted article says? The template doesn't have this entry. Thanks

again for your help.
