paddywack Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Hi all, great site. My problem is strange, My dad built me a pc a couple of years ago, not too sure on the spec etc, its a amd sempron running vista home basic. The problem is that if I press the power button I get nothing, no lights, no fan, nothing at all. I have found a way of getting it to power up but its complicated and time consuming and doesnt always work. Firstly I connect an old belkin wireless g router with the yellow modem wire connected to the pc and router, then after about 5-6 minutes when the modem light and the power light is on and the wireless and internet lights are flashing I remove the power lead at the back of the router and the pc comes on, sometimes I have to press the power button on the pc tower for it to work. ( I dont use the above router for my internet connection, its from when we was with virgin) This has been going on for months now but today I cant even get that method to work. Anybody any ideas? paddywack Posted November 23, 2010 Author Posted November 23, 2010 Ok I tried what you suggested, no joy at all. I think I need to get it repaired! Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 Sounds like its using WOL (wake on lan) where the PC shuts down, but then restarts when it detects an internet signal. Have you tried removing the CMOS battery (its the little watch battery on the motherboard) leave it out for 30 seconds and then reinsert it, this sets the motherboard back to factory settings and should allow you to boot the PC 'normally' Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
paddywack Posted November 25, 2010 Author Posted November 25, 2010 No joy with that idea too! I've find of given up now because I can't explain why I have to start the pc the way I do. Thanks for the advice guys Quote
paddywack Posted November 26, 2010 Author Posted November 26, 2010 (edited) Does anybody think it could be the motherboard, it's an asus k8V-MX N13219. Can you still buy these and how much are they? Is there an alternative motherboard available or would I be better Sending it to a pc repairer also is it going to be costly as if it is I'll just buy a new pc Edited November 26, 2010 by paddywack Quote
