Seattle ISP

[Guest Me]

I have DSL though http://www.avvanta.com/. There's no cable jack in this

room which is the only room I can use. I've checked http://www.speedtest.net and

it looks like I'm getting hosed, royally. on my download speed. 255

down/210 up

 

Same test with http://www.speakeasy.net. 278 down/216 up

 

What download speed should I be able to get from a DSL ISP in Seattle? I

don't think cable is an option because I have no outlets in this room.

 

What DSL/ISP would you pick in Seattle? Just for home stuff and a lot of

Internet surfing.

As for IsoMedia - they own a LARGE block of addresses. More than likely

your ISP is either a subsidiary or they lease their bandwidth/addresses from

them.

 

As I pointed out in the other identical posting (where I gave you some of

the information you posted here in the new post) - you need to let us know

what you are paying for before anyone can tell you whether or not you are

actually getting what you pay for. There is not one single ISP in Seattle,

WA - nor would I expect you to get a direct answer on a world-wide

distributed newsgroup. ;-) I do see you posted on a Seattle newsgroup as

well...

Also - in one of the other postings, you mentioned issues with your

computer - specifically, "The more I think about it, the more it feels like

a dial-up modem connection. The hard driver was replaced today. The tech I

used said one reason the computer(not Internet )m is slow is because Norton

Antivirus is reading every document that I have on my machine (without

regard to the Internet). He recommended AVG anti-virus."

 

Dial-up connection? You tested (posted here) at 278 down/216 up. Dialup -

at the best it COULD be (no one ever gets it) is 56/33.6 - so you are

getting 5 times the download speed of dial-up.

 

I'm guessing that was a typo and you meant your hard disk drive was

replaced? As for the tech's dumbed-down explanation of Norton - well, I

agree that it could tax your system, but the explanation sucked.

 

What is the specifications of your computer? Processor speed? Amount of

memory? Hard disk drive size? Free space on the hard disk drive? What

Operating system? (Be specific, Home/Pro/etc - also what service pack?)

Don't know? http://www.belarc.com/ and download/install/run the advisor and

see what you have and report it here.

You more than likely have ADSL:

Downstream speeds typically range from 256kbps to 8mbps. Upstream speeds

typically range from 64kbps to 640kbps. You fall into those ranges, albeit

on the low-end for downstream - but not knowing what you are paying for -

saying whether or not you are getting what you paid for is impossible.

If you want cable, use a wireless router; connect the cable modem to

cable in the other room, then connect the router. Add a wireless device

to your computer in the other room.
