Hi,

When I rightclick on MyComputer, Manage, I cannot open it.

I get that I don't have compmgmt.msc and have no access...

I've searched my hdd and CD-ROM for that file, can't find it. Where can I

download it ?

cheers

Re: compmgmt.msc

The default location for compmgmt.msc is c:\windows\system32.If it is

deleted accidently by u then it can copied over from another XP machine

having the same SP level.

R other MMCs failing too?

Wot is the error message?

Try going to start>run>mmc and see if u can see the mmc there and add

it

When looking for a file on your WinXP CD then it pays not

to be too restrictive. Instead of looking for "compmgmt.msc",

look for "compmgmt.*" and you will immediately find it in

the i386 folder with an "ms_" extension. Expand it, then place

it into your system32 folder.

Re: compmgmt.msc

Hi,

Thanks guys for your input.

I found the file on the cd. i copied it to my c:\windows\system32 folder,

then rebooted, nothing improved. I found another compmgmt file (w a computer

icon) and I clicked it, nothing happened.

The exact error I got from previous:

My computer>Manage>

MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\compmgmt.msc

"This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MC console, or was

created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have

sufficient access rights to the file."

Which file did you copy to the System32 folder? Did you expand it

as I suggested in my previous reply? You can do it like so from a

Command Prompt:

expand f:\i386\compmgmt.ms_ c:\windows\system32\compmgmt.msc

Re: compmgmt.msc

Thanks your your advice.

I've opened the mmc and there is NOTHING listed in the console.

Does that mean none of my mmc have been installed ?

Re: compmgmt.msc

MMC will open with no Snap-ins. You have to click File then Add/Remove

Snap-ins. When the configuration window opens click the Add button to

have the optional components shown to select from.

Re: compmgmt.msc

After going to Start>run >typing mmc..

We get the basic MMC so that we may customise it.

To check further..goto

On the left top..Click File>Click Add/Remove Snap in

In the Add/Remove snapin window click add again...See if compmgmt.msc

is listed there in the list of snapins.....

If it is...go to command prompt and type in

regsvr32 msxml3.dll..

If not Make sure we are copying compmgmt.msc from the right CD..I mean

Its important that we are on the same service pack levels

Re: compmgmt.msc

Hiya,

I can't find "compmgmt" in the Add/Remove snapin, this means that it's not

installed.

I've tried copying the file over from the cd again, and then register it.

No luck

Help ?!

cheers

Re: compmgmt.msc

Can we check the registries

Goto Start>run>Regedit

The registry editor opens up.Browse to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\Snapin

Check if we some GUIDs there...atleast 65-70...not sure exactly..incase

the GUIDs are missing then we may like export the snapin registry from a

working machine with same SP level.

The next option if the above doesnot work is to try re-installing ur XP

Service pack...

The Last option is an inplace repair..

Re: compmgmt.msc

hi thanks for your reply.

i did that and i saw a list of 69 items

so that registry bit should be ok i guess.

if all else fails, i will probably try to reformat or re-install the OS again.

Re: compmgmt.msc

Yes the registry seems ok then...Instead of formatting..go ahead with an

inplace repair..That will keep all ur programs intact.U wud only need to

re-apply service packs(If ur CD is not slip streamed) and Latest

updates......
