Parser message??

After installing WinXP on my new AMD Athlon dual core, the control panel

function Add/Remove software doesn't work.

It produces a small window named Parser Message that says 'Value creation

failed " at line 451'. No further explanation given, just OK, after which

the message disappeares.

The system further seems to work fine, except for the DVD drive that

sometimes is not accessible, but that also happened under win98.

To get rid of this error you can switch back to a Microsoft Theme or go

to /WINDOWS/Resources/Themes/<Name of theme in use> and rename the shell

folder to the name of the visual style shown in the appearance tab.

If that doesn't help and it should, more info here:

Did you assume I played with these settings? I didn't.

This is XP-pro just as it came from the CD. Or almost, I chose the old style

menu presentation so the jump from win98 to XP is a bit smaller, at least

optically.

BTW, there is one very small anomaly: the character -"- (and -'-) does not

appear on the screen until the next keystroke. I can live with that but

don't understand why.

The link you provided results in a 'page not found'.

No can do.

The other 2 machines in my household run win98. This one has 2 Gb memory so

win98 won't run on it.

Why would I assume anything? I gave you the usual fix for the issue, which

is an old one. Thanks for letting me know the link doesn't work.

Google the error:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Parser+Message+Value+Created+Failed+Line+451&btnG=Google+Search

Since you didn't tell us much about your computer or what you have

installed, you should look at those links yourself and see if anything is

applicable to your situation.

Did you remember to install all the drivers for your hardware after you did

the clean install? If not, you need to do this. Perhaps the "anomaly" is

occurring because you forgot to install video drivers. There's just no way

for me to know.
