Im working from home today due to the weather on a reasonably new hp Elitebook laptop (I have only had it for approximately 2 months).

The power cable was also plugged in as I was working away earlier and a message came up saying 'please replace the battery before you lose all your work' (or words to that effect). Which I didnt really take much notice of because I thought, what are you talking about, Im plugged in! Then the laptop just died, I have done everything since, I have taken the battery out and just plugged it in at the mains I have left it unplugged totally for half hour and tried to turn it on again, I have put the battery back in, on its own and then along with the mains..... nothing!! The power plug has life in it as there is a green light lit. The only means of life I have from the lap top is when I open it and press the power button the little 'lightning' symbol flashes briefly. I have texted the IT guy and he is a loss until he see's it, but just thought I'd try another avenue of help in the meantime!!

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Many thanks

Stacey

It does seem like there is a failure of either the power adapter or the battery itself. (or something in between) I would not mess with a machine that is still under warranty. The only quick check is to swap out the adapter and see if the battery is charging.

(Of course all this assumes that everything was plugged in properly because you were clearly working off the battery.)

A common problem with laptops, notebooks and netbooks is the socket the mains adapter plugs into, coming loose on the main board and breaking its connection.

The repair is a soldering job and best left to a technician used to working on these sort of faults.

As Beeceebee states, it should still be under warrant any way, so best to send it back.
