DNS issue, new installation

Recommended Posts

Just installed a new 2003 server, using the wizzard to the domain controller

and DNS. When changing a client from workgroup to domain, I'm getting a DNS

name does not exist error.

dcdiag is giving:

Domain Controller Diagnosis

Performing initial setup:

Done gathering initial info.

Doing initial required tests

Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\PPPWINSERVER

Starting test: Connectivity

The host 72e324e6-bb75-404e-88a1-e6703bfbc380._msdcs.ppp617.local

could not be resolved to an

IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc

Although the Guid DNS name

(72e324e6-bb75-404e-88a1-e6703bfbc380._msdcs.ppp617.local) couldn't be

resolved, the server name (PPPwinServer.ppp617.local) resolved to the

IP address (192.168.33.217) and was pingable. Check that the IP

address is registered correctly with the DNS server.

......................... PPPWINSERVER failed test Connectivity

Hello Paul0426,

Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the DC? IS it the only one or

do you have more?

Best regards

Re: DNS issue, new installation

Meinolf,

Couple of comments for you.

My background is Novell, this is my first 2003 server, which is the only one

in the domain. I was not planning on using DNS but active directory

insisted. DHCP is not currently installed (being provided where needed by a

router). This network will eventually have two servers in the same domain.

Another question, is there a way to edit an existing 'forwarders' ip

addresses? I only see them if I enter a new one with the wizard, but can

find no way to edit once entered.

Following is the ipconfig info:

Re: DNS issue, new installation

Hello Paul0426,

Remove the 151.197.0.39 and 151.197.0.38 from the DNS server NIC and set

there the DC/DNS servers ip.

Forwarders on the DNS server has to be configured DNS management console

on the 2003 server. In the RUN line type dnsmgmt.msc and press enter. This

opens the DNS console. Rightclick the servername and open the properties,

go to FORWARDERS tab and here fill in the ISP's ip addresses (151.197.0.39

and 151.197.0.38). If the fields are greyed out, expand the servername>forward

lookup zone and delete the "." zone. Then close the console and open it again.

Now you can set the ip's. Deleting the "." zone will not have any effect

on your domain. The root zone is not used internally.

Also on a domain controller disable the not used NIC's.

Best regards

Re: DNS issue, new installation

Meinolf,

Thanks, thougth that was the direction I should be going.

However, I had been fighting with dnsmgmt.......

It will not show me ip address for the forwarders.

I have 2 entries '_msds.ppp617.local' and 'ppp617.local', neither display

any place for forward ip addresses. FYI I have 2003 R2 if that makes any

difference.

I have also tried adding a new forwarder zone, the wizard will does not give

me the screen to add ip addresses. For some reason I thought it had.... the

mind is a terrible thing to lose :-)
