Well, make lots of floppies?

Actually, there were utilities to 'mount' a CD from one computer as a drive

on

another. You could tie the two together with a DOS driver and either serial

or parallel cables.

I've in the past had success with a laptop 2.5" to desktop

3.5" ATA hard drive adapter, such as the one found here:

If you use one of these devices, use it to install your Compaq drive in

another

machine. Then COPY the WIN 98 install set with all the CABs to a directory

on the HD. Put the HD back into your laptop, boot it, and setup WIN98.

It will mean you'll have to have at least a minimal DOS boot setup on the

HD, but that's easy to do.

Re: compacq laptop

Does it have a floppy drive? Can you boot to a Windows Startup floppy disk

with that floppy drive? (http://www.bootdisk.com) Have you done the research and

collected all the drivers you're going to need for that machine? What's the

model of that machine? I presume you have a standard Win98(SE) installation

CD, not some Restore disk that came with the machine?

You won't need a CD-ROM drive or an installation CD, if the .cab's are

in a folder on the hard drive...

"START button, Find, F/F, Win98*.cab" (That's asterisk-dot-cab.)

If 55 of them show up, the folder that contains them is a copy of the

Win98SE Installation CD. The number likely is different for Win98FE.

Usually, the folder that contains them is "C:\Windows\Option\Cabs". If

that same folder also contains the file "Setup.exe", you have everything

you need to install Win98. But best post back for instructions on how to

do it! You may need to download updated or specialized device drivers

before starting a fresh install!
