Hi my computer runs Windows Vista - its NORTON internet security runs out next week - A friend gave me a brand new an unopened Mafee internet security 2011 - bt before I install it I have a few worries - queons

1/ Do I have to remove the NORTON before installing the Mcafee ?

2/ Do you have to disconnect from your modem while you install Mcafee

3/ Can I have MCAFEE & NORTON running side by side on my computer.

4/ When NORTON says its gonna run out - will that mean I have no Anti virus at all after the next week ?

5/ Any thing I should watch out for or be aware of before installing that MCAFEE ?

I am pretty uselesss with computers but getting better. any advise very much appreciated.

thank you .

1.Yes.

2.No.

3.No this is not recommended.

4.Limited protection.

5.I will let the security team answer that one.I do recommend to fully update your computer and install the latest service pack first. Also do a disk cleanup.

Hi twedspeed, I have answered your questions in red for you. You will need the Norton removal tool which you should download from here=

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product | Norton Support

Ignore what it says about remembering your product key as you are not reinstalling Norton.

You can also use Revo uninstaller to remove Norton, but you will have to disable all protection in Norton first.

1/ Do I have to remove the NORTON before installing the Mcafee ? Yes

2/ Do you have to disconnect from your modem while you install Mcafee It is safer to do so, no risk of infection while there is no active anti virus installed.

3/ Can I have MCAFEE & NORTON running side by side on my computer. No the two together will conflict and likely to reduce your protection.

4/ When NORTON says its gonna run out - will that mean I have no Anti virus at all after the next week ? Yes it usually does.

5/ Any thing I should watch out for or be aware of before installing that MCAFEE ?

Download the Norton removal tool first then disconnect from the internet, and stay disconnected till the new McAfee is installed.

I hope that sets your mind at rest, but do ask for more if needed.

Can I just ad that Norton recommend you fully uninstall their security product, restart your computer, and THEN run the removal tool - it removes any leftovers.

Many thanx J-Bean - Synaps & Nev - I think I have everything I need to do my change over - Just one thing tho ,

My question ( 2/ Do you have to disconnect from your modem while you install Mcafee)

Still not sure wether I should be connected in case Mcafee has to update during instalation - or can it update after Ive installed and re-conected to the web ??

And I fall at the first fence .............How do I know witch NORTON product it is ???????

Removal tool has over ten diferent choices ?????????????

Hehe, they don't make it easy do they?

For XP onwards it's the same tool. If you look carefully, or if you use it alot you'll notice that Norton give different instructions depending on the product, but the tool is the same one.

To make sure nothing has changed, I tried Norton 360 and Norton 2003 and they are the same tool.

Choose one, ignore the rubbish Norton give you and click on the Download button.

I guess there are a few ways to do it.

My way would be to sort out the connection to your router first, whether that be with a cable or wirelessly.

Once that is done, just install McAfee, and register it as you would do normally. Do a restart, no doubt McAfee will update itself and you will be ok to browse, email etc whilst it is doing that.
