What are NT Authority System files?

I have no problems with this laptop...

but using the System Information tool I discovered that I have about 20 GB

of NT Authority System files on my C drive which appear to be duplicates of

my hard disc files. What are they? Can I get rid of them? How?

As I said before, I have no problems with the laptop and it's running great.

I appreciate any info.

NT Authority/System is the security ID for Windows XP. If the files in

question reside in the \i386 folder, they are backup copies and should not

be removed.

If the files in question reside somewhere in the \windows folder tree, they

are the actual operation system files and must not be removed.

Re: What are NT Authority System files?

Jim,

Thanks for the quick replay.

Last night I looked at System Information/Program Groups and there were

listed more than a hundred files with the NT Authority System prefix. For

example: NT Authority System\Documents and Settings\All

Users\Desktop\Accessories. These NT Authority System files were listed right

below the original file so it looked as if my disc drive was filled with

replica files for my C drive.

Now it gets stranger. This morning I used System Informaiton\Program Goups

and these hundreds of NT Authority System files (replica?) were still there.

So, I downloaded MicroTrend PC-Cillion and did a virus search on the C drive

plus I removed DVD43 and a copy program (DVD43 and the copy program never

gave me trouble, I just removed them becuz I don't use them anymore). Then I

checked System Information\Program Groups and now the NT Authority Sstem

(replica) files are gone. MicroTrend found no viruses.

The System Information\Program Group now looks normal with only 4 NT

Authority System files/folders remaining. These look legit. You're right, I

won't touch them.

The reason I've looked at the System Information in the first place is

because C\Properties tells me that I've used up 35.5GB of disc space even

though I can only find 16 GB (I used all the Window tools I could find

including show system and hidden files and reducing space for system restore)

so I was wondering what happened to the other 19 GB. Last night I thought

that the hundereds of NT Authority System files were the problem, but now

that they appear to be gone, I'm still looking for the missing 19 GB.

Whew. This was a strange one, for sure.

The original mystery still remains, though. Where is that missing 19 GB?

Re: What are NT Authority System files?

I found the missing 19 GB.

2 Gb is reserved for Hibernation. OK, I can live with that.

A whopping 16GB was used by System Restore. I was suprised by that because I

had set the System Restore to about 5%. Evidentally that doesn't erase the

space that had already been reserved.

Using Disc Cleanup (C then Properties then Disc Cleanup then Other) I was

able to free up about 16 GB.

I'm such a dope. I need to play familiarize myself more with XP OS.
