Please describe how exactly you're formatting your disk.

From within Windows? In a different way?

You can't format the Windows drive from within Windows, since that

would leave Windows without a leg to stand on.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if

necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean

installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when

prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

I was actually looking for words such as "I set the boot order

so that the machine would boot from the CD. I then booted

it with my WinXP CD and . . . "

Please take the time to provide as much information as you can.

Remember - we can't see your machine!

Also, if you have a SATA drive and the original XP CD (pre-SP1), you'll have

an additional step or two.

It seems to me that your problem has much to do with the HD drivers

for your drive, and little to do with the way you are attempting to do

your formatting.

Are you required to install disk drivers before installing your OS?

(This will be true if the drives are configured as RAID or AHCI.)

Check in the BIOS and see if this is so.

IF so, you will have to press F6 during installation and install your

RAID driver (usually supplied on a floppy with your laptop purchase)

before Windows will be able to access the drive.

You might try setting the drive (in the BIOS) to operate in IDE mode

before installing Windows. This will make it unnecessary to install

RAID drivers before the installation will go forward.
