When I try to set the virtual memory, I get an error that says

c:windows/system32/mmc.exe. says it requested the runtime to terminate. I

have a gig of ram but don't want to run without this

Don't set virtual memory. Let the system manage it.

Virtual memory has nothing to do with RAM (it's "virtual," get it?).

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. The system now has zero virtual memory and

when I go to set it by hitting the change buttton, I get the error. I don't

get to the page that allows me to set it or allow windows to set it.

Actually virtual memory has everything to do with ram memory,& w/o it

youre OS will not run, even with 20 sticks of ram,if it were possible...Either

way,at pc start-up,tap the F8 key,select safe mode,enter xp as administrator,

reset virtual memory, click set 2X,then exit (set to let "system manage"...

For virtual memory & ram,read kb555223

HUH? Please refrain from answering further questions regarding RAM or

anything that uses it until you understand at least what virtual memory

includes.

Virtual memory is a logical construct. Each process (in 32-bit

Windows, anyway) has a 4GB virtual memory space assigned to it. The

actual contents of that virtual space are stored in various parts of

physical RAM as well as the swap file on the disk. So both physical

RAM and the swap file contains bits and pieces of many different

virtual memory spaces scattered around various places. The OS has to

keep track of what's where in order to make sense of this.

RE: cant set virtual memory help urgent

I've tried a number of solutions but finally went to the registry. I found

the settings and had mutiple settings that didn't show up in administration.

I cleaned them all out and repalced them with correct setting 768 on the C

drive and 3072 on the D drive, separate hard drive, primary partition. Now

when I look in windows explorer I see both pagefiles on both drives,

however......

I can now go into the adminstration and set it but if I set c to zero, the

last file setting in explorer is still noted on the c drive. I would expect

no file with a setting of zero. When I go back into adminiation to set it to

something else, I get the error again. Back to the registry, fix it and

everythink is OK.

So bottom line, it seems like its OK using the registry to set this however,

I can't help but think there is still a problem that may need to be resolved.

I use the same settingon another pc with the same spyware, spam, anti virus,

and have no problems.

RE: cant set virtual memory help urgent

sorry, by the way, get the same error using safe mode or regular start up.

Re: cant set virtual memory help urgent

Probably not the same problem you are having, but when I was receiving an

error on my system, and having similar symptoms (can't set virtual memory

size, and it's always at zero) I was able to correct this by following the

instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316528/en-us

If this doesn't work, search the knowledge base with the wording from the

error you are getting, you might just come up with something useful.
