Can svchost.exe be a virus? I have it only recently running several

instances at once sometimes using 50% of CPU power. My CA Vet virus checker

nor spybot S&D report any problem, please assist! Thanks.

It is common for multiple versions of svchost.exe to be running. See:

Svchost.exe in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056/EN-US/

and

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

From Ramesh's web site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

Also: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

To find out more about Svchost.exe entries try Process Explorer:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:

In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower

Pane' options.

(This will provide some of the detailed info you may need)

Expand the Process tree until 'Services.exe' has been expanded.

Next move the mouse cursor over the Svchost.exe process that you are

interested in.

Or expand the Svchost entry if you see a + sign to the left of Svchost

entry.

(You should now see a pop up with a list of services associated with the

Svchost.exe you chose)

Next double click on the Svchost.exe process that you are interested in.

The 'Properties' Window should now be displayed with numerous tabs

available.

It is NOT important how many instances of SVCHOST.EXE are running but WHERE they are

running from !

Please review the thread ""svchost.exe" appears several times in the Windows Task

Manager."

50% isn't "power", it's cpu Time. e.g. half the time it's running that

svchost. Depending on what the computer is doing, and when, and what

background tasks are running and a few other things, this could be

normal. It could be doing anything from background defrags to indexing

to ... all kinds of things and stop the second you do something on the

computer that needs that time.

You could have multiple svchost.exe's running; at the moment, I have

6 of them running.
