Guest Bob CAD Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 We have an issue with the backup utility on Windows server. When the backup runs we are required to change tapes. THis is where the problem comes in because when the tape is changed the backup "crashes" and is not completed. Is anyone else having this issue?

You need to explain in detail what you mean with "the backup crashes". Might also be a good idea to post a copy of the backup log.
Guest Bob CAD Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 RE: Windows Backup PROBLEMS In addition (thanks Pegasus): The incremental backup works - it is using one tape. The complete backup is where the issue arises. The first tape runs fine - it asks for the second tape - says media is full - and the second tape is inserted - a message comes up saying it is full and it will be erased - reply ok - the program stops and suts by itself. The backup logs state nothing significant. "Bob CAD" wrote: > We have an issue with the backup utility on Windows server. When the backup > runs we are required to change tapes. I suspect that this is an issue about RSM, tape libraries and managed/ unmanaged backups. Have a look at this tutorial: http://syneticon.net/service/w2k/ntbackup_en.html
Guest Bob CAD Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Re: Windows Backup PROBLEMS I am going to have someone look through the document you pointed me to – but I would think the backup utility would be pretty straight forward. In essence define your backups (i.e. incremental and complete) and your done. If you need to change the tape your there to do that and it finishes. In the office I am in we use Yosemite and that works for us but we only use one tape – is it possible we should upgrade the hardware or software? Thank you for your assistance. Unfortunately this is not so: Using ntbackup is a bit of a chore at the best of times and quite demanding when it comes to using multiple backup tapes. If this was my show then I would avoid situations that require more than one tape. It's just not robust enough. There is a good chance of something going wrong during the tape change process, and if the first tape of a tape set is flawed then all subsequent tapes become useless. Much better to use a single backup medium. Whatever method you use, remember these iron rules: - A backup process is useless unless a full test recovery is made right at the beginning and then once or twice a year. - To have a reliable backup it is mandatory to examine the backup report regularly, e.g. once every 8 days. This is easily automated by sending yourself an EMail message with the report attached.
