simonh Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Right, Have now changed Mobo, GPU (GTX 295), CPU (quad core now), PSU and RAM and am still getting this problem. I've been using MSI Afterburner lately which has helped as long as I set the fan to a continuous speed so you may be right about the under load issue but what can I do about that other than what I am already? I'm about ready to dump it all in a skip and buy a mac (words i never thought I'd say) :p Quote
KenB Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Hi Simon GTX 295 if this doesn't cope nothing will !! Try taking the side panel off and directing a desk fan ( if you have one ) into the case. Run with the side panel off. If it is OK like this then there is an overheating issue. Because I do have a cooling fan for my CPU but it doesn't currently fit my (new) motherboard. Also why I does it run OK when I force the fan to run? Quote

Obviously with the fan running at speed the air is circulated better aiding cooling. The fan should kick in automatically. I do have a cooling fan for my CPU Are you saying that you do not have a cooling fan on the Central Processor ? Some older ones used an aluminium heat sink. Which do you have ? The asus one came with the quad core CPU I bought from my friend but doesn't fit my current motherboard, It comes with a matching heat sink which also doesn't fit. The fan I'm referring to is the one on my GPU which seems to go to sleep after a while. Quote

Your Video Card does heat up and the more data it has to move around the hotter it gets. The fan should kick in at the temperature rises. If the card overheats this can cause the problem you are having. Sometimes it can cause the system to shut down. Don't know if I have asked this before ( apologies if I have ) ..... Some video cards have a power connection on-board for 1 or 2 6 pin power connections. Does yours ? And is it connected? quad core CPU I bought from my friend Are you using this? What doesn't fit your m/b ? ( CPU or Fan ? ) If you ARE using this does it have a cooling fan attached ? If it came with one it should do. If there is no fan the CPU will heat up as it is processing data and again, this can cause the problem you are having. It usually causes a shut down. simonh Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 The new GPU has a 6 and 8 pin connection and both are connected although I had to use an adaptor for the 8 pin as my PSU doesn't support it natively. I'm using the new CPU but I'm using the Intel fan currently as the Asus cooling fan doesn't fit my current board. I've had it in since last night but it hasn't shut down yet but I haven't been pushing it that hard (due to the fan not fitting) Quote

If this is not cooled properly you are going to get problems as the temperature rises. Run Speccy with the side off then with the side on. See what happens regarding the CPU temperature. I'll pick up a new motherboard that I can attach the cooling fan to and get back to you then to see if that's helped Quote
KenB Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Please be aware that if the m/board is not exactly the same you will invariably have to re-install the operating system onto the hard drive. This will result in loss of data. If it comes to this we can advise on removing data from the drive first if necessary.
