Current (today) SP3 Issue

I rebuilt a new machine using an XP SP2 CD. The install was 100% successful.

Using Microsoft update I downloaded and installed SP3. Once complete again

using windows update and selecting custom I selected the following software

optional updates:

 

Windows Media Player 11

Remote Desktop Update

Silver Light Update

..net 2.0

Root Certificate Update

 

They all downloaded correctly. Windows tried to install them one by one.

All 5 failed to install. I searched on the Expert Exchange for this issue.

The answer is in KB943114. Registering wups2.dll corrects the issue. What

is going on at Microsoft? I have tried this on at least 6 different branded

systems since SP3 was released. All had the same result. There are hundreds

of storied of this posted on the web. Does anyone know why this is happening?

 

I will be calling tomorrow to open a case with Microsoft Tech Support. I

will post the cause and solution once they figure out what is wrong.

First - for those searching for answers - mind the OPs typo..

 

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP

installation

The OP said 943114 instead of 943144.

 

While I have no idea what answer (if any) the OP will get - it seems the

article that was loosely quoted above gives the explanation. Either the

"Wups2.dll" somehow got replaced on the person's system with an older

version (which method 2 would remedy) or the registration in the system

registry for "Wups2.dll was somehow removed (method 1 fixes that.) So the

reason the fix worked is obvious. The situation that led to that fix

working is less obvious.

 

Admittedly - why this is happening to some SP3 installers is a mystery to

me. You wouldn't think the solution on said web page would remedy a problem

where the installation of SP2 is included. I cannot tell (at this time)

whether this is a problem with SP3 itself or a reaction betwween SP3 and

some other stuff on some people's systems.

The only "stuff" on this system is XP Pro SP2.

So you did not even update the drivers for the hardware?

 

The PC was never connected to the Internet and you installed the SP3 from

the downloaded (on another machine, saved to external media) executable or

used the ISO image to burn an SP3 installer CD and used that on this system

to install SP3?

 

Still IE6 I assume?

 

Was this installation of WIndows XP done from an original/unmodified

installation CD - or had some OEM/you made modificatications to it?

 

Had you connected to the Internet and activated the copy of Windows XP?

I had the same problem. I reinstalled XP and didnt even bother with SP3.

Stuff like this happens because a service pack is NEVER 100% tested on

all brands.

Some brands have modified hardware causing this sort of trouble,

However software is most likely the biggest issue here it might be due

to conflicts due to various configurations that differs from brand to

brand.

 

Sending a report to Microsoft about this will inform them of the issue

and a fix will be be out whenever they figure out the problem.

 

Been like this with ALL service packs.

And it's understandable. There's no way Microsoft themselves would try

their new service packs on all brands and all their models. Easier to

just release the service pack and the the users do the testing.

 

This way Microsoft recieves the feedback they require to make teh

changes that needs to be done to future fixes and updates.
